You sure it wasn't the angle of a light source? You know how if the sun is at a low angle you get a huge shadow, that might have caused it...

Well, as far as I've heard the shadow grows into the shape of, err, a big, fleshy antagonist.

Spoilers maybe..don't know how to do the blue boxes...
I was freaked out by this lvl myself. Fireplaces making crackling noises with no fire. Those faces on every fricken wall. My bro came in and laughed at me once cause I was so scared, so I told him to play. Waited 30 min walked back into the room, then quickly slammed the door behind me. He jumped like 5 ft out of the seat.
I hate more whats after it though..I mean I ended up using most of my holy vials, but then you have to go into a crypt with definite zombies. I saw one guy in the builder costume running toward me. Thought is was a friend or something, wasn't until after he hit me I noticed he was a zombie. Killed him only to turn around and run right into two more..ouch. I died the first attempt.

Faces on the walls?! I didnt see that, but to be honest I probably missed alot of stuff in that level since in the end I had to turn the brightness up and the sound down just so I could finish the level without pissing myself in fear.
I even tried playing it a 2nd time afew weeks back and gave up as soon as I ran into a patient, nothing scares me like visiting the Shalebridge Cradle :erg:

Well the cradle certainly was eerie, though another part of thief which raised the chills a bit more was my first snoop earlier in the game within the keeper compound around the balcony outside Caduca's room, while sticking to the shadows that little girl translator walked past me, as she walked past me her shadow suddenly extended to the size of a grown person, then shrank again when she walked past. Not sure if it was built in or a glitch, but it certainly preyed on my mind.
If you watch carefully, you will see that all of the female models change height like that sooner or later; the effect is simply more pronounced in the Gamall child, presumably because she is shorter. I've never heard a better explanation of it than that it's simply a glitch.

T'was not a zombie, t'was a Haunt, or at least one of TDS's rather poor excuses for Haunts. Had it been an Old Skool Thief Haunt, it's highly unlikely you would have bested it hand-to-hand.

I LOVE the entireThief series. And I agree that the Cradle mission was probably the most.... "scary", mission of T.D.S. I did like the funhouse charm of Abysmal Gale though. As for the Cradle, it just wasnt really THAT scary to me. It was very fun with some new twists and I loved it. But it wasnt really.... scary, in my opinion. Alittle bit creepy maybe, I guess ? It could have been pretty scary though..... I guess I expect too much from just a video game, movie, book, etc. Maybe I will go back to replay the mission, and try to get a good chill out of it :-) What about this 7th Crystal you guys are talking about ?? Is that one of those Fan Missions ? Is it actually kinda scary ? (lol) Im just starting to get interested in the whole fan mission thing, sounds neat. Im hoping that if I do get whatever I need set up to run FM's, that they might actually even give me a good scare here and there. As well as introduce me to some of the fine talent, that I know is out there :-)

Hello CWB,
Yes, get stuck in to some of the many FMs that have been created in the last few years. 7th Crystal is pretty good. If you have a certain genre you like post it up on the fan mission forum and someone will give you a list.
I think for me in Deadly Shadows, it was the stone men that were really creepy. Crashing feet and really weird voices. Don't forget that some T3 fan missions are coming through now.

Thanks Mary, I will look into the FM forums, maybe find some scary ones hehe. And those stone men in D.S. were pretty fun :-)

when I went and did the cradle mission, I knew there would be a bunch of zombies. Ive played Thief I and II, I knew this mission would be loaded with zombies. Just walking around the streets pickpocketing people, I saw a note in south quarter about some guy who refused to do a job at the cradle tearing it down or something. I heard some guy telling a few people about the cradle, too. Gave me that feeling in my gut, that I knew what I was going to have to expect on that mission.
I bought 24 flashbombs and about 4 landmines, a few water arrows, and some other junk. I was ready to go. I changed my use key to shift (for quick zombie killing).
I was walking around in the lowest level, and I went to walk slowly but accidentally hit the shift key and a flashbomb went off right in my face. I just about fell out of my chair when that happened.
I went back upstairs, and was walking into the main area near the whitehall where theres so many damn clocks ticking. I saw the zombie walk past the doorway in the background. I pulled out my landmines, crouched down, and tossed one. It hit the wall near me and I ran away from that.
Later on as I came running back trying to hide from the zombies, I walked over my own land mine.. It was about 2:00am, I have my car subwoofers laying on the floor powered by a large Kennwood amp, two 12" woofers, and a 5.1 home theatre speakers. I had these turned up 3/4 volume, because I was trying to listen for anyone walking around. That landmine was like a cannon going off in my room. It was LOUD and scared the crap out of me.
The cradle was awesome. Sure beats the hell out of any modern hollywood movie. I played it for a 3rd time, with fraps running to make a movie of it. I was sweating more than when I did a 2 mile run at the airforce, during the summer. Im serious. I think its even worse the second or third time, because you know what to expect and where its going to happen, but your not 100% sure exactly where. Zombies always catch me by suprise.
