Cradle. Dear God... - by mol

I understand the concept of why they had patrol locations, but I think it would have been far more unnerving if the puppets were free-roaming.

Played Thief 2 and fell in-love with it so i had to buy Thief 3. Thief 2 never really scared me but i was shocked when i played Thief 3, the first time I was scared was when i had to sneak past those large pagan monsters with the strange almost human faces, like the half-human, half-alien from alien ressurection.
I played the cradle level at night with the lights of, and with headphones to really get the atmosphere, but i never imagined it would be this scary. With the headphones in you can really head all the voices and stange noises in the background music. The thing was though that before i played the game i heared from a website that there was no enemies in the whole level not just the beginning. So imagine my utter panic as whilst im picking open of of the cell doors, already terrified just by the atmosphere of the place, on onf those zombies comes out of nowhere scraming and attacking me, and i had no holy water and just a few flashbombs.
I've never been as scared in my life, really. My heart was pounding all the way through and i kept looking behind me (in real life) whenever the music made a strange noise. And that scary loud, grating sound that happens when you travel back in time really spooked me. No film can come as close to that sense of reality and interation that scared me.
The only game to come close to that level of scary atmosphere was the original Alien Vs Predator.
The Cradle is a masterpiece! Shame that there probly wont be a Thief 4.

FIRST mistake, King! It took me a long time to complete the Cradle, 'cuz after starting it the same way you did, afterwards I could only play with the lights on and in a roomful of people! ;)
There should have been a warning somewhere in the beginning that the Cradle level could cause you to make a mess in your pants!!
Even tho I'm not usually big on zombies or ghosts in games, I LOVED it!!

I was actually relieved when I ran into the freaks in the cradle, at least at first. I thought it was wierd when the entire place was empty the first half. I haven't been this scared since the first Cathedral mission when I went into the house with the hammer haunts in it. Needless to say I didn't turn of the electricity and I didn't have any clue what those noises were so I ran smack into one of them as I went up the stairs and into the other as I tried to run out of the building.

I think it was the "neverending" part about Cradle that made it bad, aside from the Murus's daughter issue.
What Murus's daughter issue? Wasn't Murus the dead hammer in RTC in Thief1?
van HellSing on 23/11/2005 at 20:14
Lauryl is to the Cradle what Murus was to the Cathedral: an annoying ghost that sends you on errands. Hence the joke of Lauryl as Murus' daughter.
DarkElf_Mairead on 24/11/2005 at 04:06
OOhhh I see. I liked her though, she was sweet. And Murus was nice, for a Hammerite.
