Cradle. Dear God... - by mol

I was afraid of using fire arrows on that door from fear of what might hear it and come up the stairs behind me. :erm:

Great mission. I "mostly" ghosted it my first (and so far only) time through. After I got into a situation where I had to kill a puppet, I quickly realized to my horror that I couldn't pick up the body. And to me, that meant "This thing is not dead and will probably be quite pissed off when it wakes up." So I opted for having most of them not know I was there, than knowing I was there, waking up, and hunting me down.
Contrary to my usual playing style, I've actually been backstabbing these poor....creatures. I just couldn't handle it when they were walking about. The trick is to follow their pattern of movement, and find a spot where they can be safely sneaked around when lying deadish, i.e. jumping at your throat if you get too close.
I still can't get over this level. Now, I consider myself a logical, rational person, who doesn't get all worked up over a horror film or who isn't afraid of the dark and the things that go bump in the night.
But nothing prepared me for this. I don't know what it is, but the Cradle is the most disturbing experience I remember in a long, long time, perhaps ever. Something about it just gets to me in a nasty way. At the same time, in a strange kind of way I love it, while hating every second of it.
A stroke of mad genius. The stuff that nightmares are made of....

The mission is simply amazing. The entire atmosphere was incredibly frighteningI loved the way the Cradle has its own personality and memories. Along with the heart beat I heard in the background, the entire experience made me feel as if the building itself was alive and suffering.

Oh my god, how I love this level! :ebil:
I just love stuff like this.
And I WAS totally freaked out! I was SO nervous and jittery and I was starting to just spaz out, AND I LOVED EVERY SECOND OF IT!

There were parts of it that reminded me of a good serial killer movie. The dank basement where you know you'll see something that you just don't want to see, little flashes of shadow that flick across an open doorway. It called up memories of the worst parts the killer's lair in Silence of the Lambs or Kiss the Girls...very disturbing.

The Cradle is my favorite thief mission of all time.
I have never been that scared/freaked out playing a video game ever!!!!!!

I hated it. I mean, I can appreciate it on an artistic level as the achievment in Survival Horror that it is, but its not my idea of what being a thief should be about, and its not the kind of gameplay I look for when I buy a Thief game.

Aww, dude....
Ill worship whoever made that level.
I don't think it was really survival horror. It was nowhere near Resident Evil.
It's not that much different from the undead levels in Thief 1. You can sneak through the whole mission, really.

This mission took me forever, I was cacking myself all the way through. Spent a while with the sound turned off looking at the attic door smoking a ciggy trying to get the courage up to open the damn thing.
Was there any significance to the oddly placed chairs in some parts of the level?
