Cradle. Dear God... - by mol

I'm gonna have a baaaaad time with the cradle. I was playing the St.Edgar's cathedral level, and "inadvertently" let loose a zombie in the Charnel forge. Jebus, it scared me. I swore up and down when it chased me out of the room! I think it scared me because I was so used to just human enemies, and to thinking of the Hammerites as totally bada**. The zombie ate them for breakfast.

I tried to let both of 'em out but they wouldn't come out. I guess I was too good at hiding in the shadows. I had to run in, hit them and make them follow me. Even then, they didn't come after me. I finally had to keep dropping stuff to make them hear me. Finally torched 'em in the creamator.

If you havent Blackjacked the priest that walks around and open the door to your left when facing the doors (the one with the sleeping zombie) then it can distract the entire hammerite force there. For me he ran over and got stuck on the door, and his spells kept hitting the doorway. He'll call for help, but nobody else can get in, he is still blocking the doorway!

Yeah, it scared me too. In a fun way though- I didn't get nightmares or anything, but I did end up screaming and half-falling out of my chair once.
The Cradle didn't prepare me for FEAR though... Had to put that game down. I could see sleepless nights ahead.:o

I've had dreams involving the cradle. Not exactly nightmares, because I wasnt scared in the dream (well, let's face it, most nightmares are things like a large carrot rolling through a field of lobsters. Stuff that isnt scary in real life) but still it did involve the cradle.

I've read everyone's posts so far and I've even downloaded that excellent PDF file and relished every minute of reading the article and interview on the Cradle.
HOWEVER it has not subdued my fears one bit and I hope the Thief community will not belittle me for refusing to play that level.
Yes, I do not intend to play through it at all, not once. You heard me right.
I'm just afraid it might affect me deeper than I really want to be, psychologically. If I had a friend to sit beside me to play it together, then yes, maybe. But I play my games alone, and I just can't see a good reason to put myself through this. I KNOW it's an excellent level, I'm dying to run through it to feel the wonderful atmosphere...
But I...just...can't....

We won't belittle you, but realize this; if you give into the fear it will own you and nothing The Cradle can do to you will be worse than that.
I got over my fear of playing in The Cradle with less than six shots of rum in me. Now, I have to get over my fear of only doing it with five...

Reading Cradle threads makes me feel like a masochist ...
Perhaps I don't have it too far to a similar Asylum?

I think LittleTaffer is very wise in not pushing himself to somewhere he doesn't want to go. Ok, it's just a game on the surface but games often leave physiological impacts, even good ones. Its often quiet hard to forget things you've seen (ok again in this example its just a game but not everyone is as thick skinned)!

Thank you, and actually it's "herself" :D
Well, let me quote a bigger example. I used to get stuck at the Mines in TDP because I couldn't get past those sleeping zombies outside the electric generator. Even seeing the first corpse, lying in the corridor with flies buzzing around it, was enough to make my hands tremble, literally tremble.
After some encouragement from members on the forums, I managed to get past the Mines and even finished the Bonehoard, but I was shaking. I continued shaking for half an hour after quitting the game.
Can you imagine what would happen if I did the Cradle? I think shaking would be at the bottom of the list...
