That's ok. It's a terribly awkward situation.
Perhaps, but awkward grammar irks me.
Ah, well.
By the by, I just finished my second run through the cradle. It still gave me the willies and I
still found myself sneaking through the Outer Cradle even though I know damn well there's nothing there.
I have decided though, that the cutscene just after is worth it (bishie Garrett or no).
"I'm afraid that we'll have to tear a few pages from the Book of Names!"
Yesss.

I have just beaten the cradle too, It is about the fourth time.
Even though I know what is coming, there is something about that place,it still scares me rigid. I love it though.:ebil:
There are a couple of really interesting articles on the cradle maybe old and you have all read it. Good article though.

Thanks for the link Gillie, I hadn't seen that before. A nice read with some interesting info, plus the interview was... enlightening.;)
I enjoyed the artwork as well, and I may have to print out a copy of that map for my next Cradle run-through. The one from the game is not terribly helpful.

Just installed JohnP's Puppet texture update. So, I was trying to observe them more closely. After holy-water attack one of them fell on its side. 'Ok guy, let's see your face' -- and I started to push it to make it fall on its back. It fell, but immediately covered its face with its hand. :wot: Really creepy.
Hmm, and another thing I noticed. Isn't puppet ragdoll model better than other thief characters? I mean, I can't blackjack them, but if I backstab them with dagger, they fall like they have real bones, not get crooked as a roll, no arms/legs in strange directions etc.

That might be because backstabbing always triggers a proper death animation, whereas with blackjacking the characters usually simply makes them go limp instantaneously, causing the strange poses.

I think the biggest scare about the level wasn't the level itself, it was what wasn't there that scared the crap out of you.
I think the best example was
the painting of Laura.

Think about it; nobody makes the connections but you. You see a painting of Laura, eventually it disappears once you free her, since the Cradle forgot her. The real question though is who painted it? Then you realize that the notes through the level mentions a patient that liked to paint, and Laura herself said the patient in Cell 5 would go up to the observatory and look at the people below and paint them.
Creepy.
Well I've owned Thief for 2 years but it wasn't until now that I finished the Cradle. I remember first time entering that... place, I didn't have a clue of what to expect. I was sneaking through all of the Outer Cradle expecting something to jump out from the shadows any second and simply couldn't believe that nothing was there. And when I went up to the attic and heard the famous rattling sound, I ran out of the room. Not in the gameplay but for real (my aunt thought I had become crazy, which is true - it was an asylum, wasn't it?).
But the funniest thing that happened in my first encounter with the Cradle, was the first time I met one of the inmates. My cousin was there when it happened, and he too got scared to death. I was walking right into the White Hall expecting that nothing would be there. But that was until I entered the cell. Both me and my cousin went "YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!" and fell backwards off the chair - waking up the rest of the house. My mother came running up the stairs to see what all the ruckus was about. She came in and saw a pile on the floor consisting of me and my cousin, some chairs and a bookshelf(and all the books and other things that was on it).
Thinking about it today still makes me laugh:laff:
There has been a few days since I finished it now, but I still hear the music from the Inner Cradle repeating itself in my head. But I saw someone suggesting to make T-shirts with "I survived the Cradle" printed on. I think this is a very good idea. Did anyone make these? I'll do it for sure!

I absolutely agree. I was more scared in the Outer Cradle than in the Inner.
If you look at all the suspense going on ambiente-wise in the outer cradle, it sure is good that there are some puppets in the inner cradle; I -at least- was "glad" about the sudden change. Otherwise, I would have burst from anxiety.
Oh, and that level was the reason I didn't replay TDS for quite a long time. I just couldn't bear the thought of having to go there again.
Give me a Haunt anyday, but the Cradle...

When I first got to the door in the Outer Cradle, I bolted back down the stairs and hid in a little alcove, and had to take a break and pace around the house for a little while, trying to work up the nerve to go back.

Hmm, I don't know they both get my adrenaline going. I've just started to replay TG and I'm already dreading RTTHC. I was actually contemplating wimping out and doing the 'wedge the door open with a skull' trick only to find out that they'd "fixed" that in TG.
*Sigh* It seems that I must be brave despite myself.

One of the things I found scariest was that when I killed a puppet.
Unlike other zombies when there properly dead they don't dissolve and I was slowly backing away from the corpse thinking that at any moment it would hop back up and tear me to shreds. Then when I left the corridor the fear kept rising thinking that it could be sneaking up on me getting closer and closer and closer..........
