Cradle. Dear God... - by mol

I am glad people liked this (the whole game, not just the mission). I really thought a lot of people would dog it. The graphics are really nice, but I still expected much criticism of that, too. In fact, I stayed away from the forum because I didn't want critiques to taint the fun I was having.
As far as escaping the cradle, I tried a few different things. Jumping over the table worked, but I ran behind the chairs one time (right side), and got out even faster than jumping. I didn't hear anything out of them as I went by, either, so I don't think anyone saw me.

Dudes,
The cradle was one of the most intense missions I have played in forever. I thought I would never see a mission that would beat Return to the Catherdral for scariness and intensity, but this does it. I have had my socks scared off by some fan missions before (Lady Rowena...) but this by far beats them all.
As far as any criticism goes, being a thief is about being scared. What if I get caught? What if I get killed? That Pepsi machine is gonna fall on me and kill me, I just know it... Maybe this isn't a creep up behind him and bop him on the head fun for the whole family, but it is fun. :thumb:

Come to think of it I didn't really find it scary beyond the attic part a little creepy yes, after the attic I started having fun with the zombies e.g. putting oil down and making them slide into puddles of holy water, so they are effectively lying it in it! hear them sizzle :cheeky:

I actually feel bad for those of you who say you weren't freaked out by the cradle at all, or didn't find it scary. I feel bad because you're going out of your way to not be immersed in the game or get the full effect of the place. I know some people who make jokes at scary movies because they don't want to be scared.... they are terrified of letting something like that get to them. To me, that's missing the point of watching the movie at all.
Allowing yourself to be creeped out is part of the fun. It's like when I was 13 and my friends and I snuck out to a graveyard in the middle of the night. It was kinda spooky, but the fun really began when we began to vividly imagine hands shooting up out of the ground grabbing our ankles as we ran across the graves.
To the people who can't feel that, who refuse to feel it, or are feign macho-ness but are actually too terrified to feel it, I'm sorry. You're completely missing out. Your Thief experience did not reach it's full potential.
And as for the comment about this mission not being Thief-like at all, that's 100% false. Thief, the original Thief, the game that DEFINED the series, was littered with the supernatural and undead. It's interwoven into the city and has been there since the game hit the shelves. Hell, it was a part of the very second mission from the get-go. Return to Cathedral was designed to freak you out. Just as the Cradle was.

I have no opinion on whether players like irR4tiOn4L are resisting immersion or not, but I will say that I suspect he read a lot of the spoilers here before playing the level (since he and ZylonBane seemed to be the biggest detractors of Deadly Shadows before even playing it). If that's the case, then it might explain why it didn't creep him out. I think Shalebridge Cradle depends entirely on the suspense/surprise factor. If you don't know that the first part of the level is enemy free, I can pretty much guarantee you'll be hugging the walls in a cold sweat, looking in every direction every time the "predictable ambient" noises get louder or softer. I know I was, and I don't get spooked by many horror films.
I plan on surprising several of my non-Thief friends with the level, just to get their reaction.

It was a few nights ago when I finished this mission. While playing this mission I felt quite edgy and somehow "trapped". What kind of psychopath construsted this "Cradle"? I must admit that the absence of enemies at the Outer Cradle was even more scarrier. Why? I was thinkikg: "No enemies here? This looks bad..." Anyway, good ridence!!! Off to the next mission (which I have already started) :thumb:

EEk, those new zombies are so freaky! They shake and convulse and they make really creepy noises once they see you. They chase you like cheetahs and are very hard to kill! I just nailed 2 with a mine and threw flashbombs with holywater on top just in case. Then I closed the door on the one who was put into a doorway. I would love love love to see one put right into the middle of Stonemarket, it would be cool to see it fight! Hey, this is the real reason we need an editor: so many new AI's, we'd make one hell of a creature clash!
By the way, how did yall manage to kill them so they wouldn't get up? Im half-way done with the mission now, but it's gonna take more than one night, I will tell you that.

They usually dun hawe time to scratch you if you use the hit&run style.. That is, assuming that you recower quickly from the rush of mowement caused by the sudden appearance of our ghastly target :sly: ..
I dunno why but I remember the film "house on the haunted hill" whenewer i play this one..
