Many people single the use of crates Deus Ex out as odd. (The same goes for games in general).
What are people's views on crates?
How can they be made better?
Do they serve a useful purpose?
How about crates with breakable sides? Like in Half-Life uplink.. where you can bash through a single side of a crate to hide inside it.

Get rid of them, entirely. Except for places where you would logically find crates in real life, like a warehouse. How many crates do you see on a daily basis? (Don't answer this if you work in a warehouse ;) ) I thought so. It wouldn't be hard to write crates out of the game almost entirely - just put the equipment up on shelves, in cabinets, lockers, etc. Some stuff in DX is already stored that way. Crates just break some of the immersion for me. Plus, they are a temptation for level designers to come up with the dread
crate stacking puzzle and that is just wrong.

That is pretty funny. But I still think crates are the only way to make a game pratical. How else are you goning to find ammo and weapons, and other useful items without crates. Besides it adds to the Puzzle aspect of a game.
