Gosh, in the 3 years (give or take) since I last played TDP, I had forgotten how utterly creepy the Craymen are.
You hear frequent comments around how the zombies, or the burricks are one of the elements of Thief that many people are put off by. But the Craymen. What the hell is the story with those hellish beasts? They seem to be crablike humanoid beings, but where the freak do they come from?
I can only vaguely remember the ape beast things from the latter levels. The Lost City however, with its freaky fishlike beings have haunted me forever in this game. The point where you've picked up the water talisman and are just leaving the crypt like area, for me thats the point where Thief just takes a nosedive into being too much of a Tomb Raider game.
I actually just had too turn it off. Its too much for me. I tried the level skip cheat but it won't work.
God give me strength.

I think the noise they make is what gives them their creep factor.
Don't recall any background info on the craymen.
You sure you skipped right? Someone correct me if I am wrong. Cntrl/alt/delete/end? Or something like that.

They can be sneaked like guards.
Hide yourself in the shadows, throw an arrow at a nearby wall to distract them and run for your life. If you run and jump like a rabbit chances are they will never catch you up.

That fear is exactly what gives Thief its brilliance; the emotional engagement constructed within it affects game play to an incredible degree. It's not like a modern diablo-clone or unreal tournament, where the rush of victory or the despair of defeat is really the greatest emotional range you can hope for (with the exception of the human interactions in multiplayer.)
How scared you are of the obstacle can make it much greater an obstacle to overcome.
For example, I never finished Escape from the Cathedral (except by stacking bones against the front door. I was so happy when that worked!) The zombies were too much for me - just knowing that there could sense me, that there was nowhere I could hide for long, no way to fight or get rid of the blasted, rotting things - couldn't do it.
To speak nothing of the Cradle's imaginary terrors. A map with maybe 8 enemies shouldn't take the hours it took me to complete.

It's Ctrl/Alt/Shift/End.
Or you can edit the user.cfg file to start a "new game" at the level of your choosing. Below is my Thief Gold user.cfg. Remove the semi-colon from the mission you want to begin. For spending money at a load out store (if avaliable for that mission) remove the semi-colon from a cash bonus line to get some coin. So below I'd start The Haunted Cathedral with 3000 cash.
;cash_bonus 3500
mission_map 1,2,3,4,5,15,6,7,16,9,17,10,11,12,13,14,18

I also got scared when I left the temple area and was greeted by a bunch of craymen; I wasn't prepared for that at all, but, if I remember it correctly, I ran and jumped onto one of those small ruined buildings surrounded by lava and was safe. I could then shoot broadheads at them.

Craymen are my favorite creatures in Thief 1, I never forget the moment in the Lost Cathedral map hearing unfamiliar clicking noises; I hid in the shadows and saw some freaky bug-thingy I never saw before looking after me.
As it got closer and closer to my hiding place I jumped out and run like mad, looked back and saw the thing following me.
I draw the sword and made a overhead swing but the bug sidestepped and attacked me like a berserk, two attacks later from the crayman and I was eating the dirt from the floor.:p
But the blue craymen from the maw are also pretty neat, as far as I remember they are taller and can take even more damage.
I wish newer games would make monsters like thief, they were new and fresh back then. Today opponents in medival-based games look either like undead or gaint 8-feet tall sword swinging berserks wearing armor that seems to be heavier than a SUV.
Anyone having a picture of craymen? I cant play Thief on my new PC so it would nice to have a picture of them to remember.
