Is it possible to import objects from Maya or 3ds Max into The Dark engine? Can we edit the character/enemy models and create our own objects?

Yes, it's not only possible but done frequently, at least with 3DS Max. I don't know about Maya.
But you need to use the search function before posting new threads. There is no problem with starting new threads whenever you have a question and you can't find the answer by searching so don't hesitate to do so if that's the case. But we really do prefer that you do a thorough search first. There is a lot of info available here and it's usually easy to find.

A tip is to search using google ("site:ttlg.com") if the internal search function doesn't give you what you want.

It's possible to make models in any 3D modelling program, provided that you have some means of converting the native format to .3ds (or exporting from the program as .3ds) so the N3ds2e program can understand it. I use Lightwave for modelling, and (
http://www.micromouse.ca/) Accutrans3D to convert to .3ds.
