Thief's a pretty tense game, don't you think? Tell me about the moments that made your heart pound and your adrenaline rush.
All moments from the Cradle mission are obviously out of discussion, since that's way too obvious....
I'll start... The first had to be on my first time through the Hammer church mission.
Now, Thief: Deadly Shadows was the first Thief game I played, so naturally I had never faced Thief zombies yet. Come to think of it, I had hardly faced any zombies at all in the past time... So I had grown very apprehensive of the loading tips about flashbombs damaging zombies and such... But I was pretty sure I would not have to face them for some time, leastways not in the St. Edgar's Church.
When I reached the cages, I had no idea what was inside them. After disposing of the priest I proceeded to open one of the cages... And beheld what looked to me like a very tortured and starved prisoner lying motionless on the floor. I took several steps forward to look for valuables, and then BOO! The 'prisoner' springs up at me with an unearthly moan. :wot: :laff: :laff:
St.Edgar's minor spoilers
The second memorable time had to be
getting ambushed by the stonies. I was deeply disturbed by the Hag's orders in the cutscene (Cut him till bleeding stops....) and to the end of the cutscene I was thinking 'Ooooooooh shit. What have you gotten yourself into this time, Garrett?' The thing that was the biggest factor towards my fear of the stonies was that I immediately assumed they were immune to everything.
When the cutscene ended, I proceeded to make a wild dash past the stonies towards the door on the other end of the hall. Naturally they gave chase instantly. I ran towards the exit, but missed the turn on the left, and ended up among all those bookshelves. I leapt up onto the wall, but discovered Garrett could not climb to the balcony with the exit.... :laff: So much for climbing gloves. :D I had taken enough damage already, and there I was, hanging a mere foot above the stonies' reach, while they shook their fists shouting things like 'trapped and trapped'. They were right. :D
I gathered my courage, leapt off the wall and ran back to the Upper Libraries. There, I waited until I got my pulse back, re-entered the Lower Libraries, and made another dash towards the exit; this time, successfully. :D
Imagine my amusement when I, upon replaying the level, tried a different approach and actually snuck past the stonies all the way without even getting seen.
Keeper Compound, Hall of Statues spoiler

Scariest thing that happened to me was a mistake, really. After making my way through the Keeper Compound I eventually crept into Caduca's chambers. I was totally freaked out by the fact that a figure was sitting, hunched and with her back to me at the table. All I could think was that Caduca's ghost/zombie had returned, or that the whole thing had been a conspiracy and she was still alive but in hiding. I doused the lights and crept very slowly down to the front of the room, not knowing what to expect. Of course I felt rather stupid when I realised I was using all my stealthy skills for the benefit of a lump of rock.
And I thought I was the one who was petrified. (Bah-dum tish!)

The first few minutes of being chased by the keeper enforcers. I stopped for two seconds and then turned around and they were right bloody there! It was ridiculously atmospheric to get chased ragged all the way to that fence's house. I also got the feeling that I was some kind of homing beacon, cause they kept on saying something about closing in on me. Was a bit dissapointed when I realised how tame they were. But they did get the jump on me when I got up to the "Thieves Highway" only to find a keeper enforcer there!

Edit: Hmm...this isn't so much creepy as it is nerve-racking/embarrassing.
(This used to happen to me all the time, through out all of the game...mostly when I was a noobie thief)
I had very poor timing. I would sneak up on a guard/statue, Garrett would raise the blackjack high in the air...only to have the guard/statue turn around right before I had a chance to strike.
Very unnerving to be left standing there like an idiot with a bludgeon in attack stance, while my would-be victim flips out and starts slashing away at me.
*gaurd turns around, sees Garrett* "What the bloody!?..."
Garrett: "Oh...uh...I was just uh...scratching my back..."
A better example of "creepiness" would be
the pagans who mysteriously commit suicide in the Pagan Sanctuary...like the Shaman who burns to death in his own fire...or the she-pagan who always falls off a loft.
makes my job that much easier. :)

I soooo know what you mean. :D My first time was similar. At the very first attempt, I stayed in those bushes and eventually the two enforcers near the compound found me. It was really scary, because one kept thinking
'Ssssssensing.....', and then taking several steps towards me until he could see me and attacked me. I reloaded, and had to watch the cutscene again. On the second attempt, I made a run for it, going towards the east. All the time I kept dodging guards, and when I finally located Ramien's place and climbed up the stairs, the Enforcers were fighting the guards right below me. Although I doused the torch before getting to work on the complicated lock, the light gem wasn't that dark, and I felt I was standing in complete visibility, and expected the enforcers to climb up the stairs to attack me any second.
When I got in and discovered Ramien dead, I readied a gasbomb to throw at anyone who followed me in, and I knew that they were effective, having already used one to take out the first two enforcers. The whole time I was hearing pounding footsteps and comments about how they were closing in
right next to me, and I had the impression the enforcers were right there, outside the door. (Later I realised it was the enforcer on the roof; not that that was of much comfort, I probably would've felt even more terrified had I known that ANOTHER enforcer was somewhere right above me.) I had the illusion that they could actually SENSE whenever I moved or even shifted my weight...
I stood with the gasbomb for an awful long while. :D Also, it took me ages to discover the letter, because I kept sneaking around the house crouched, afraid to make a noise. Naturally, it wasn't after I finally ceased to crouch that I saw the letter. :D

One of the scariest moment for me, apart from the St. Edgar's things inside the prison cells, is when I am first in that Abysmal Gale. I don't want to move an inch because those thing's sound is so horrible!
The other one is the treebeast charging at me in the Pagan Santuary. They run so fast!
The Woodsie Lord on 16/9/2006 at 20:45
Oh yeah...the treebeasts. I played the game not so long ago because I really liked that level. So, what happened. I "accidentally" drew attention from one of those treebeast thingies. So I ran out of the water, and I said to myself: Ha! They never come out of the water. The next second, that green thing comes stampeding out of the water. I was like: WHAT THE FUCK! YOU'RE NOT SUPPOSED TO DO THAT! And I ran from the beast, whole the way up to the highest levels, I strode unto a ledge, and the beast fell off. "Awooooo!" *Splootshj*
And of course, the Abysmal Gale. The ship going from one side to the other, that was horrifying. I went down through a hole in the floor, so I heared the zombies. Well, I heard them all the time, but I turned around, and looked straight into his face. I was shocked, I got my flask of holy water, and plunged it into his body, while shouting "THE POWER OF THE BUILDER COMPELS THEE!" You should have seen the look on my mothers face :P

I still my remember my first adrenaline rush from the Thief series. I started the series with the Metal Age and was playing the Eavesdropping mission. There's a small room somewhere at the start of the mission, went in, heard the servants' voice for the first time, got jittery, turned around, and there was one just next to me. I flinched so hard I knocked my computer speakers to the floor. :cheeky:

Oh sorry wrong forum. Well, in Deadly Shadows my first real scare were the
enforcers. They make a nasty sound...
If not counted the ones with supernatural atmosphere (Abysmal Gale, the Cradle...) I'd go in for the Overlook Mansion. Funny thou, the thunder storm is only on the other side of the building. But the part where Moira stayed... One well-placed lightning and you jump from your trousers.
