Is it just me or trying to use the crossbow for a "silent takedown" leads to a great deal of frustration?
It's understandable that a terrorist, if shot at with a Tranquillizer Dart, would begin to think that something is afoot and start to get suspicious. It's even understandable that, if there is a buddy terrorist nearby, he would call for help and both start looking for anyone suspicious in the vicinity.
What I don't understand is how, after shooting a terrorist with a Tranq Dart and quickly hiding from sight (i.e. leaning against a wall to get a clear shot and then leaning back, out of sight), the terrorist instantly KNOWS where I am and who I am, starts yelling "Fascist! Pig! There he is! It's a cop!" etc., shooting in my direction and, if there are other terrorists nearby, they'll soon be converging to my location, thus ending my attempt at a "silent takedown".
It's mind boggling and VERY frustrating, especially if you're used to the AI of games like "Thief".
Does anyone experience the same frustration?
Or am I not being reasonable expecting to shoot a Tranq Dart at someone and just wait for him to fall to the ground without alerting his buddies?
I agree that, in some locations with three or more terrorists, it would be natural that the terrorist, while the Tranquillizer has yet to take effect, would start running around and alert some of the nearby terrorists, what I DON'T agree is that said terrorist, after being shot at, would immeadiatly turn to shoot at and chase me like it instantly knows where I am and who I am.
For someone trying the stealth approach, the Crossbow + Tranq Darts are very important and if they are this inefective, it starts to get pretty hopeless.
Well, share your thoughts and have fun.

It's true that the enemies always guess your exact location no matter where you are or what weapon you hit them with. It's annoying but you can still work round this.
What special talent the enemies seem to have in remote detection abilities they certainly do not have in the realm of staying alert or following you once you're out of sight or up a ladder or something. The trick to a crossbow takedown is either to get an enemy when they are on their own or to work methodically, taking down an enemy with the crossbow then running off and hiding. In a minute or so the others will have forgotten you were ever there ("must've been the wind or something") and the alarm will stop, they'll start patrolling as usual. That's your cue to sneak back round to pick off another one - you can use this tactic as often as you like to clear whole areas of enemies. The only thing you have to remember is to be patient. You can't exactly expect the enemy to just sit there and take the tranq!
Of course, the only completely silent takedown is with the cattle prod and/or baton. However, to do this you've got to be fairly skilled and sneaking up behind the enemy requires a great deal of nerve. My preferred method is to use the sniper rifle with silencer - the guys make a noise when they die but it's a one shot kill when aimed at the head and you can't say fairer than that.

Seems to me that if you hit them in the head wiht a tranq dart, they will decide they are in mortal danger and start to run away unless they pass out immediately.
Body shots will give them more time, and then yes, they will start shotting at you.

Note that a dart (as opposed to a tranq dart) to the head is as silent a kill as a silenced pistol or rifle is. (The riot prod is the only totally silent kill - well, and the baton, but it's harder to take someone down in a single hit with that).

Actually, even on untrained low-tech, the baton easily takes down any soft target with a single whack. The trick is hitting them in just the right spot -- hitting them in the head only pisses them off, but if you aim just at the middle of the back, they go down quickly and silently (and sometimes they're down before the sound of the whack on my system -- go figure

Middle of the back, eh? I'll give it a try. My experiences with the baton have been painful, relegated to finishing NSF on the run without wasting ammo, and busting things.
I
love busting things!

ever anything but the occasional rat in the trash bags, trash cans, normal barrels, and cardboard boxes? I have yet to find anything in one, but it's early yet. Plenty of stuff hidden behind them of course...and the simple pleasure of busting things...
On the crossbow...Upon arrival in Hell's Kitchen Paul (my stupid brother) admonished me for killing lots of people at Liberty Island. Well, I was new at it! They kept shooting at me!
By Battery Park, I had learned to love the tranq dart. In the subways and tunnels anyway, my compatriots insisted upon taking down everyone at ground level on their own!
I cleared the whole subway from the vent shafts, I love it. Ammo doesn't seem to be a problem in this game so far.

Yeah Paul, well STFU!

Actually, the most fun you can have with trash is setting it on fire. This is especially fun when there are NPCs about -- start throwing trash onto burning barrels and watch them walk through the flames without taking any damage. Either that, or they cuss you out for messing around.
Note that when you get lots and lots of burning trash, your frame rates will slow to almost zero.
