They've never been very good indicators. I could probably dig up some tech demos that are a few years old and looks way better than most/all of todays games.
You "oh" and "ah" the first times you see a tech demo, when you later play the game based of that very engine you quickly realize they had to remove 50% of the stuff in it to get it to run at an acceptable framerate. It's one thing making something to show of cool graphics, that's easy.. its a whole other matter to show something that has good graphics, AI, physics etc.

You're right about the tech demos of yesteryear.
But if you can't see that the gfx in this tech demo are very, very close to the visual quality of current gen gfx then you're surely a noob.
Its not the quality of the visuals that I find impressive, its that all the interactions/physics are supposed to be real time.

All those Cryengine 2 demos that were shown off a couple years back were great indicators on exactly what Crysis would be capable of graphically and...er...physically.
Granted most people didn't (and still don't) have a computer capable of running Crysis at max settings when it came out. But the game Crytech demoed that made us all ooh and ahhh did, in fact, ship. I don't see why Cryengine 3 will be any different.

Well, they didnt include everyhing in the final product + those games werent created for consoles. Dont be disapointed if the final product looks more like FarCry1-2 than Crysis on your consoles.
The lamest things they do in the tech demos are showing of physics.. It's possible to do amazing things with it as long as you dont havea AI or other CPU-intensive tasks going on.. there's a tech demo of the latest unreal engine where they show like hundreds or maybe thousands of monsters running at the same time.. impressive stuff if you're a n00b and expect that in-game :P

Stalker already has global illumination. You need to enable it in the console by typing r2_gi on.

It looked very okay, actually. The only problem was limited amount of models on the screen; the draw distance was really small. The game tried to "cheat" by spreading and thinning the models over longer distance, but it was still visible. Another problem was lack of different models; over half of cars in the game were cabs, for example.
But well, that was a console game, what can you expect. They make cellphones with more memory.
