Ah, the glory days of running games that required, alternatively, extended RAM, expanded RAM, the majority of that 640 KB of conventional RAM, and asked you to juggle with UMB settings while loading MSCDEX and mouse drivers, and not to talk of the VESA drivers if you wanted SVGA modes.
Damn those days were fun.
--Reminiscing aside, Cryostasis is rather poorly optimised as a game. Not that I have an issue with it as I recently upgraded, but I can see how frustrating it would be. It does look pretty, though. The shaders for the ice and the rest are quite something to look at.

FWIW, Mothra is in the minority as far as performance goes. Out of the box with the latest patch on an e7200/8800gt it runs like shit. Not bad in some parts where it holds 40-50fps, but sometimes for no reason it drops to like 10. Seems like a common problem, too.
I fixed it by using a custom init.cfg or something similar. If I can find a link to it I'll post it here, as it helps a lot. Also, if you're using an ATI card, good luck, period.
Edit: Here it is:

I just use the init.cfg the guy put together that simplifies some of the particle effects and removes some of the debris. With that I can turn up the detail all the way with just the odd hitch here and there, instead of the constant fluctuations.

So rage more, it just makes you look incompetent.
Yes. It must be due to MY incompetence that the game has shitty optimization.
Thanks for the link Jason. I think it helped at least a bit even though I am indeed on an ATI card. My framerate still drops drastically in some situations and the lighting seems to be the main culprit, but overall the game seems more playable.

I felt more privileged when Windows 95 put a gun to autoexec.bat's head and pulled the trigger. :p
Even during the Windows 95 days (but before all new games were Windows-based), I had a config.sys menu (that also influenced which lines of autoexec.bat were being run) with 5 different options to run my various DOS games.

Man, I just quit to DOS and worked from there.

Did anyone ever figure out the FOV issues with this game? I'm finally around to playing and even ignoring the atrocious performance (ATI card, sigh) the FOV seems to be totally screwy - not just one widescreen (where it's vert minus and the HUD is stretched) but in 4:3, where everything is super tall because it's convinced I'm playing on a widescreen.
The story sounds cool but I'm thinking of just bagging this until I get a new computer in a couple of years that can brute force the shitty optimization. Though that won't fix the FOV issue.
Edit: Yeah, fuck it. It's a digital download and I have a physical backlog. See you in two years, Cryostasis!

Thread necromancy. I'm playing this. Got to the part where the guy in the elevatorshaft metamorphoses into a bug last night. That's the point where I decided that maybe I should stop, and continue playing when it's daylight outside. This game is scary.
It doesn't run very well on my super high-end PC and much of it looks flimsily put together. But the atmosphere is fantastic, the combat is ok and generally the story is interesting. And I love it when you turn on the engines in a section of the ship and everything defrosts and iceshards start dropping from the ceiling. Thumbs up from me so far. This game certainly is more than the sum of it's parts. :)

Hope you're playing it because you got it on Summer Sale, it's 10 EUR/USD right now. I think it will possibly get lower later on.
