Well also because it's a ship it makes for some fairly bland environments. Hooray, here's a cramped tunnel full of piping, let's see where it goes. Oh, another cramped tunnel full of piping. After all, that's what a ship is.

As opposed to a spaceship, you mean? There you have the luxury of wiring and paneling and -of course- blinking lights.
Take any spaceship, from any series, and it'll be boring without the crew, the crew's personal touches and/or the results of some extraordinary event. There is only so much fun to be had by looking at paneling and structural detail.
Personally, I don't care much for setting. Historical, contempory, scifi or fantasy, usually they can be interchanged (bar some technical features) without really hurting the game.
What I do care about is coherence and detail of the surroundings in combination with the story. "Remember Citadel" written in blood on a wall, has a severe impact on the atmosphere of a scene. Whether the wall consists of hitech-paneling, basalt blocks or beige painted sheet metal: it doesn't really matter.

You've obviously never been on a ship.
Especially not while wielding a long rifle. My what adventures I'm missing out on.
@Dethtoll
My point about Rapture is that the story couldn't exist independant of the character. It's not just a place that you can explore, it's a place youre "destined" to explore. Which becomes pretty apparent, earlier than the game spells it out for you. With SS2 on the otherhand you're nameless and can easily be anyone, so the game is not about your relationship to the events that happened, it's purely about the environment and the preceeding events. I just think this game looks more true to that idea. It's not a huge difference, but it's one I musingly pointed out. Because, you know, as an independant thinker I can come up with these awesome things called thoughts.
Also, SS2 is still a ship. Sure, it's a sci-fi ship that's way way bigger than what we'd normally encounter. But it's a fucking ship. I think the environment in Cryostasis is interesting because it's something not frequently explored in video games, and it's real, so you won't be scratching your head trying to understand how one elevator can connect 6 levels that don't make any sense when stacked above each other (and while I realize this ship shouldn't be anywhere near the same size, but if you've ever been on a cruise liner, they're absolutely massive, with incredible amounts of area to explore, if you mapped one out to scale in a game it'd be far larger than the one in SS2.) I think if the designers have any amount of creativity the ability to explore a nuclear powered ice breaker will be interesting and notably not boring. After all, for decades we've been playing games that take place in
caves, and somehow we've yet to exhaust that idea ("you enter the room and there's some rocks, and oh look! a bugbear!")

You know, I get those "headaches with pictures" sometimes too.

It's funny that last reply is August 5th, because there was a new vid August 20th. And it took me three months to notice. Anyway, (
http://www.gametrailers.com/player/38693.html) here it is. It's much better than the first one, both content and style-wise.

Interest suddenly went up sharply.

That looks pretty good and they really seemed to have got the freezing cold atmosphere down.

Another to keep an eye on.

Anyone else got the vibe they just showed the first five minutes of the game after which it turns into a standard shooterfest?

I did. Reminds me very much of Call of Cthulhu- starts off scary and atmospheric, turns into meandering crap once shooter elements come in.
