Seems to be a hardware issue.

Just checking google, it seems like a lot of people are having a similar problem, Dia, and it has something to do with HDR. The only real recommendation I've seen is to increase the values of these in your game.cfg file:
r_HDRLevel = 12
r_HDRBrightLevel = 2

Found it, but all it contains is the following:
-- [Game-Configuration]
-- Attention: This file is re-generated by the system! Editing is not recommended!
r_Driver = "DX11"
r_fullscreen = 1
r_Height = 768
r_Width = 1024
sys_highrestex = 1
sys_spec = 4
I'm afraid I don't know enough about altering cfg files to feel comfortable trying to alter this one. Thanks, henke, but I think I'll just move on for now. Although C2 was entertaining, I still like the original Crysis better (except the part where I had to fly the twice-damned VTOL which handled worse than a broken tank) and since I'm towards the end of C2 anyhow I think I'll just put paid to it. The darkness has definitely been a hindrance but I managed to forge ahead in spite of it up to this point and I've decided I'm just not invested enough in the game to start messing around with something I know so little about. Thanks again, though.
Now it's a toss-up between Metro 2033 and the Far Cry series (yeah, I've got a serious backlog of games). Decisions, decisions.

Dell Ultrasharps are great monitors for the price. I bit the bullet two years ago and I've been pretty happy.

Thanks dethy. That's exactly what I was looking at online a little while ago. I've read a lot of great reviews about the Dell Ultrasharps btw, and had already pretty much decided that was what I'd buy. I'm so damned attached to my CRT that I'm afraid I'm going to need an intervention, though. Guess it wouldn't hurt to just go out & buy a new (tad more modern) monitor so I'll have it on hand when my CRT finally kicks.
