Yeah, and I'm one of 'em. Bionic Commando not being on Steam was a dealbreaker.

Same here.

I wonder how many "Steam or nothing" people were the ones calling it antichrist when it was first released.

Not this one. I just had no use for it at the time- I was on dialup and didn't play multiplayer games, which was the only real reason to get Steam at the time.
Didn't actually install Steam for the first time 'til December 2004. Guess what game I bought that needed it.

EA have their own digital download service.
All downloads are digital. The term you're fumbling for is "digital delivery".

a friend bought me Warhead as a gift on steam, it isn't even THAT more expensive compared to retail (as it is with ALL new games on steam most of the time in europe), i think the difference is only 8euros. So I will be getting it. I liked Crysis, it was OK and I still have hopes for the Multiplayer.
and btw, I did download BionicCommando from Capcom, it was totally hassle-free, they don't have any kind of steam-rip-off GUI so you just install the game and enter your access code, nothing else steam doesn't do as well, only in the background.
and BCR is just plain brilliant. no "only steam" argument could prevent me from getting it.

I'd happily use a fair alternative service, like Gamersgate (never fucking Direct2Drive, fuck that.), but Bionic Commando Rearmed uses the "modern" version of Securom and only has three online activations. A limited number of activations is a deal breaker. Fuck that, I bought the 360 version. I plan to also buy the PS3 version in the future (for the superior controls).
EDIT: Sorry, it has five activations and if there's no (
http://tinyurl.com/6mbkuo) revoke tool out now, then it's in the works. I can tolerate that, just not EA's implementation.

"Digital download" is a widely used term for the concept within the games industry.
Obtuse as it is, it's just semantics. No need to lose sleep over it, my anal retentive friend.

I think the term you both are fumbling for is "digital distribution", the most common collective name for Steam, GOG, Gamersgate, D2D and other such services. ;)
