One of the reasons I like Steam is that my library of games is portable; inflicting this kind of limitation on a platform that in itself should be protection enough is beyond comprehension.
On another Steam related note, I've also stopped buying new "AAA" titles on Steam as much because their prices are so much worse than retail or other digital distribution outlets. They seriously need to look at keeping prices competetive.

So that's what it's all about! I wondered why the guy in the store (and the game box) warned me that it needs internet for activation.

Just so everyone's aware, all releases of Warhead, that's including the Steam one, include SecuROM protection a la Spore.
I wasn't planning on buying Warhead(I bought Crysis and yes it's a big deal) ever since Cevrat Yerli or whatshisname blamed Crysis' poor sales on piracy and said he's going multiplatform, but it's good to have another excuse.

Any opinions on the game's performance? I've heard several times that it looks and runs better than Crysis.

you're right about AAA tiltles on steam. even with the good euro-US$ exchange rate they are just too expensive. I can't see why anybody in europe buys from them. well, Warhead is a little cheaper but it would have been even cheaper in retail. since I got it as a gift I will use it.
well, problem is, no publisher seems to care about steam's own validation service and use their own inhouse as well (see BIOSHOCK or 2KSHOCK)
the only games that are 100% portable on steam are mostly Valve's titles and some indie games.

Which I find to be stupid. You have a perfectly good, perfectly viable activation system- one that Valve has been working to perfect since its inception- and you just go ahead and go with one that sucks and previous experience has taught you that everyone- everyone, including the Steam-bashers- hates the shit out of?

And it's already been cracked.
Way to go. I'm sure the profit made in the several hours before it was cracked greatly outweigh the loss of customers due to terrible copy protection, right?

Surely it's only a matter of time until EA's resolve crumbles.
You think?
S'rsly, I'm not sure whether I share your optimism on this. Sure, (
http://games.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=08/05/09/2318229&from=rss) EA backed down (a bit) on previous DRM debacles, but I'm getting a feeling they feel reasonably 'safe' in their current 3-activations-and-then-you-need-to-call state. I doubt they are really all too phased by the Amazon reviews. In the long run, they might change their habits, but I can't see them doing so anytime soon. Of course, I will gladly eat my hat if I'm proven wrong on this; just means I need to buy a hat first...

I say they keep the 5install limit and then remove it after a few months (like bioshock did) but they aint gonna remove it completely. well, one can hope so I'm off to amazon :)
