I'm getting a boxed Nordic Edition which I think is just rebadged Premium Edition. I'm not really into digital distribution yet and I love the REAL extra stuff :D. I tend to avoid Steam as much as possible because I mainly play single player games and prefer easier mod support. I would use GOG for non special edition purchases though.

i want to buy this game in a physical format, a jewel box with a dvd and hopefully with other extra content( maps, audio cds with the soundtrack, a special gift etc...) and i hope it won´t be needed to install this game via steam.

the game does not come with steamworks if that is what you mean.
you only need steam if you buy it from steam directly. the retail edition will have a first time activation and registration for updates/DLC, then you can play it offline without the DVD anytime.
the gog-version will have no activation but you will still need to register with a serial to get updates/DLC.

Those are good news Mothra, i´m glad to know i will be able to install this game without Steam :thumb:, by the way Assassin´s creed "Brotherhood" does not require any online activation or to play it online ;)

Most games that aren't Valve don't require Steam just yet.
I've spent about 10 minutes googling and surprisingly I can't find any comprehensive info on games that
require Steam to play. A few off the top of my head: FEAR 2, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and Black Ops, Fallout New Vegas, and Duke Nukem Forever. I think also Metro 2033?
Hm, okay, this (
http://forums.steamgames.com/forums/showpost.php?p=20226320&postcount=1) list only counts for 2011 but...

Civilization 5, Dawn of War 2 and Supreme Commander 2. All games not mentioned yet that I was pissed off to discover required steam to play, because I like to avoid steam and don't want to have to wait two minutes for steam to load and update before I can play a game.

I´ve bought call of juarez 2 last year and it didn´t require any steam installation or a internet activation, though metro 2033, fallout new vegas and fear 2 require steam as i recall.

Okay, I'm actually going insane, my copy doesn't use steam at all. Must be getting confused because every other game I've bought recently has required steam. ups.

Steam doesn't stop mod support? Fallout: New Vegas is Steamworks exclusive and has a huge and thriving mod community, as all Bethesda games do.
If you're going to hate Steam, at least hate it for well-informed reasons! ;)
Which I partly think is one of the main reasons people hate Steam; I didn't like the whole idea of the thing until I actually started using it - now I think it's great.
I won't be buying The Witcher 2 in any hurry, as I haven't got around to playing the first one yet. The main issue I'd have with buying a new game on Steam isn't Steamworks, but rather the ridiculous prices that Steam charges for new games. A boxed copy from Amazon is always significantly cheaper than a Steam copy, despite the fact that the box and manuals obviously cost a lot more to produce. The Witcher 2 is €45 with the 10% pre-order discount on Steam, vs €29 from Amazon with free shipping?
The only thing I ever pre-ordered full-price on Steam was Portal 2, reasoning that at least Valve get all the money for their own game.
