Sigh. Such stupidity. Its NECESSARY to put DRM on the disc version, otherwise the whole system would collapse. Its proven.

The thing with cracks, though, is that while they're very good at keeping up with release dates, they're considerably worse at keeping up with patches.
I'm probably going to end up purchasing Bioshock 2 on Steam whenever there's a $5 sale for this exact reason.

Another thing to consider, copied-disk piracy is way more common in Europe than in the US. Some eight years ago when I still lived in Poland, every weekend, you'd go to a few bazaars that, among tons of imported cheap shit, would also have a metric fuckton of pirated, copied games for like a few zloty (usually around $1-2). So putting a cd-check in a cd-oriented country is not a terrible idea. But I hear that's gone down and torrents are in nowadays.
Also, a sneaky way to convince people not to get boxed version, but GoG version, ergo more profit to the devs?

There is no cd-check here though. Just the activation and a five active installs per serial key limit.

Well, I'm now wishing I could cancel my steam pre-order. While I don't give a rat's ass about DRM, only GoG is being given a pre-load option. Given the size of the game, this essentially adds another day, maybe two, to the release date.
