A friend of mine introduced me to Sonoio earlier this year. I had never heard of him. For me, "Enough" is the song of the year. Awesome. Just the sound of the albums is already something else.
Because of Sonoio, I also listened to some NiN. They suck. Their old albums sound like crap. I also listened to the remastered versions. The sound of some songs sounds better. But the music is still crap. So over the top cliche boring, it must be American. :) The remastered version of a song called "Closer" has good sound. But I still can't listen to it.
Although, to be honest, I've been listening to some more old "gothic" music. Music I had heard long time ago, but that I skipped at the time. Turns out I still don't like it. Like Clan Of Xymox. (I installed it in my collection this week. Listened to it. Removed it again). Today I got Red Lorry Yellow Lorry (1st album). I had bought the vinyl album in the eighties. But I never listened to it, because I thought it was crap. It turns out it is still crap. :) Weird how music can be hit or miss, without any rational explanation. I also listened to some American Gothic albums, because I saw them mentioned on some "best Goth album" lists. Lycia. And Black Tape for a Blue Girl. No wonder I had never heard of them, both terrible.
You know what the only good NiN song is ? This one:

Speaking of mashups, Pomplamoose just released a mashup/medley of Sweet Dreams & Seven Nation Army that's, shall we say, pretty good.

It's funny that you mention Clan Of Xymox. Clan Of Xymox is a Dutch band. I am Dutch. Clan Of Xymox is an eighties band. I happened to have been young in the eighties. Clan Of Xymox is seen as a "Gothic" band. The music I happened to listened to in the eighties (and many of my friends) is now considered Gothic. (Joy Division, Virgin Prunes, Sisters, Cocteau Twins, DCD, etc. FYI the term "gothic music" didn't really take off until 1990. When all the classic gothic albums were already 10 years old).
True. Well, or at least late 80s. No "goth" band ever wanted to be "goth", until it became a genre. Sisters of Mercy refused to be labelled goth, even though they were viewed as the godfathers of goth. If Paz was here he'd explain it more clearly. Sisters, Joy Division, Cure, Bauhaus, all that stuff. Goth means something a little bit different now than it did in the 80s.
And I also get what you mean about them not being popular in NL. In my language, we have a saying that roughly translates to "it's difficult to be a prophet in your home town", meaning you find success elsewhere but is largely ignored from whence you came, since they remember how you started out and dismissed you early on.
I could rant more about Xymox, but I shan't, it's late and I'm tired.

I just want to point out that music is subjective in the extreme. Lots of folks like things I don't. That's fine. It's about what speaks to your heart and not all hearts are the same. Be boring if they were. So opinions on music are dismissed out of hand if they disagree with ones own and rightly so. The music you like is yours not mine and vice versa. I like getting a taste of strange whether I like it or not but that's just me. However if anyone bases their like of any music on where it was made I've got to call BS. If I were to limit myself like that I would lose so much good music. It's the worst sort of crap ethnocentric behavior. Just my opinion of course but I don't come here to have my own tastes thrown back at me. I come to taste things I've not before.
Anyway, I missed Samantha Fish last weekend taking my grand kids to see the natural science museum in Jackson while she was in Nashville. An old high school buddy is curator and took them behind the scenes to pet alligators and stuff. One day I hope to catch her somewhere near.
Wish the sound were better but it's live.

I like that one paired with the video dema. It's like a Mobius strip (of the Heavy Metal Magazine variety).
Here is one my daughter likes and I see why. I think I raised her well.
