Every cutscene should be skippable and support optional subtitles.
That's my main grip about the first two Thief titles, the cutscenes doesn't have any optional subtitles. I sure would have liked those with all the background noise and weird voices going on.
I played Assassin's Creed last month and it was the main grip I had with that game too. I couldn't skip the cutscenes, and there were no subtitles. Granted, the gameplay was repetetive as hell too, but that's not where my main complaint lies.

Agreed.

ooh, subtitles. some games have characters that are just plain difficult to understand, and I'm a native English speaker!
and dear god pausing is needed. ever told your Significant Other to wait while you watch a movie in "your silly game?" that's a no-no.
also, revisiting cutscenes from an Extras menu, in case you missed something or just want to rewatch it.

Really...this is what you are fucking worried about? Of all the things they could fuck up, this is probably the least of anyone's worries (well those with any sense). Relax, who cares about such a trivial issue.

Well it seems that pretty much everyone here seems to agree with me that they should do so and they seem to care.
Trivial issues are still issues, by the way. You don't overlook small problems just because there could be bigger ones. I'm not saying HOLD THE GAMEPLAY OFF! MAKE THESE CUTSCENES PAUSABLE FIRST!, but it's still a problem in gaming as a whole that developers need to start fixing.
And technically this isn't something they could "fuck up", since if they neglected it (which they probably will) then they would only be following in the footsteps of every other game. But THERE IS NO GOOD REASON NOT TO ALLOW PAUSING IN THE MIDDLE OF A CUTSCENE. How much of a problem is debatable, sure, although pretty pointless to debate. The point is that it is still a problem.

Big Gun's just demonstrating his uselessness in these here forums. He's trolling. He knows damn well that most of the big ideas have already been hashed out for 5 to 10 years, and that we're brainstorming ideas afresh about everything that could use improvement to make a Thief game that fits with the times, and pleases the long-time fans. Maybe I'm giving Gunny-SACK too much credit? He also has much more important things to worry about than anything going on regarding us. The fact that he took the time to fart in here means he's full of it.
As to the real topic, I don't know if anybody knows this, but all three games had skippable cutscenes (hit Enter), and if you never wanted to see the T1/TG/T2 cutscenes in-game anymore, just don't do the indeo fix, heh heh. Also, what I've always wanted were pausable and REWINDABLE/REPLAYABLE movies.

I think it goes to the loading/checkout screen after the cutscene, right? There should be a button there to replay the cutscene, would work perfectly.

Yeah.
This is how it is for TMA. The first screen we come to after the briefing is:
Inline Image:
http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i106/jtr7/GoalsScreen.jpgThe button to replay the briefing should've been on that menu, but instead, after reading the objectives and setting our difficulty choice, we then wait for the mission to load, and then we come to the store:
Inline Image:
http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i106/jtr7/LoadOut.jpgNotice that the briefing replay button is there instead. So, give us the space-bar pause and a button on the first screen following the briefing movie and retain the skip option already in place. Maybe in the training mission, the information can be put on the screen "Press spacebar to pause, Enter to skip." And maybe in the starting menu, a "Skip Movies" option? Is there a mod for the
ini files for TDS?

That's not logical.
If pausing allows screenshots, then ... *wanders off, jabbering happily to himself about desktop wallpapers(

Pausable would be good. But if the cutscenes are great, you won't want to skip them. ;D
I don't like cutscenes to be part of the fights, no matter how short, unless its after the fight is over..
The way ttlg did cutscenes, New missions have a short movie that is designed to get you interested and anticipating the thrills in the next mission. It tells you the things that Garrett already knows, so you know them too. Also, and this is CRUCIAL, though it seems minor, the briefing starts you out with Garrett's OPINION of the mission its people and other subjects, so that you start out with that opinion (his wisecracks and glib comments) in your head too. You think what he thinks and know what he knows. You start the game by getting into character. You complete the mission and sometimes get rewarded with a short movie too (like in final boss fights).
Cutscenes sometimes show you glimpses of Garrett in action, or talking, furthering the plot.
The cutscenes should do everything they can to make you think and feel like you are Garrett and a master thief.
One of the very special aspects of this game.
In addition, since I'm online right now and I want to beat the horse some more,
The reason we think that the Hammerites are screwball fanatics, though partially through their own dialogue, messages left around and their attacking all "heretics", is also because that is Garrett's opinion of them.
Everything Garrett thinks and comments on colors our opinion of things in the game as we go along. His remarks are not so random in my opinion. They shouldn't be entirely random.
