Well, the blackjack is useless against the undead, which is where the dagger comes in :). So no, there is no point backstabbing a hummie other than the satisfaction of killing a pesky character (ie. enforcers), just as there is no point of fruitlessly clubbing an undead with the blackjack.

You can backstab haunts in TDP and TMA, how about TDS?

Yup, the dagger can be used to kill haunts in TDS

Works pretty well against Cradle puppets and shadows.

I always chose the blackjack, using the dagger just felt very un-thief like. I wish the developers hadn't changed it.
Actually, I feel the dagger is more thief like than the sword. It's small, easy to carry, doesn't make loud clanking noises (well, it didn't in the first two games, but in real life it would :cheeky: ) and I find it's much easier to use as a defensive weapon. Whenever I drew the sword in the first and second thief games, it slowed me down a lot and I couldn't move as quickly. In thief 3, I've learned how to attack with the dagger successfully while not getting hurt one bit. It's fun. . at one point I was fighting four guards at once. :D
(this was during the moments of chaos, like when the hammers and pagans were fighting in stonemarket and such. .)

Personally I did like the dagger in TDS better. As stated, it seemed to me to be more thiefy than a big huge sword. On the other hand. . .I rarely used the dagger. lol
I used the sword more. . .but rarely backstab any of the 'normal' people (unless I"m just feeling totally ticked off then I might. . .just to be bad, But then I usually feel guilty and have to reload. Go figure.) I use it freely against non-humans or undead. Burricks I almost invariably go hack to pieces, haunts etc. Zombies just creep me out and since it doesn't kill them, I don't bother. People, though, I prefer to always use the blackjack. Its quieter, and after the expert mission objectives that clearly make a point of 'a true master doesn't need to murder. . .' etc, leaving a mess blah blah. . .I tend to avoid it as much as possible. After all, he's a thief, not an assassin. Indulging on non-humans is a good compomise, though. :)

*cough* tweak *cough*
it seems like crouching or creeping whether you have the choice...crouching is just as quiet and just as fast but more stealthy...
So...when someone works out how to change it back to blackjacking alert guards...i'd do it as backtstabbing as long as you're behind them and blackjacking while not alert. Someone has yet to figure it out though
