Ironically, Dante’s vision of heaven and hell is pretty much already the primary basis for the Dungeons and Dragons universe. You might as well just release a typical hack and slash RPG set in the Lower Planes: it would be almost the same setting and you wouldn’t have to justify naming it after a literary classic. Another example: if you’re going to have a game set in the Forgotten Realms (very similar to Middle Earth) featuring two hobbits named Frodo and Sam, you probably shouldn’t call it “Lord of the Rings” if it’s just going to be about them wandering around killing monsters.

They don't have any pretentions about it, it's just a good setting, from what I have seen they are doing a fine job. It's clever from a marketing perspective, rings a bell with everybody, and the various levels of hell make for a great episodal structure, they can go crazy on the art without having to explain anything.

Why would they ever need to explain it? Gamers are quite used to the concept of themed levels with 'crazy art' and have seen enough films like
Seven etc to get the whole deadly sins concept. So basing the game on a piece of 14th century literature that I'm quite sure most gamers aren't even dimly aware of isn't going to add anything.
Yes, the whole circles of hell thing is indeed a great setting for a big-dumb action game and I'm sure Visceral Games will make a highly polished and fun game out of it but there is no need for a completely inappropriate adaptation that would be funny if it wasn't so embarassing. People scoff at Hollywood's adaptations all the time but even they have never pulled anything as colosally wrong-headed as this.

But why would anyone consider it to be an adaptation, nobody is expecting that, I am sure there is a Dante's Inferno comic book somewhere, or at least something losely based on it but with superheroes. What does it matter.

Demo's out on the PSN, and it's strange, but I think I like this game more than God of War. I mean, it's a blatant imitation, but the style—everything from the hand-drawn cutscenes (and CG ones look brilliant too) to the winking Christianity-kicking-ass motif—is somehow more appealing to me than God of War's bleak earnestness. These are both the kinds of games that don't usually impress me but the Dante demo's surprisingly entertaining. I just wish we could get past the whole "push button X as much as you can for five seconds."

On PSN? Going now...
Edit: Demo not on UK PSN :(

Just set up a secondary US account on your system, mang. Mine's got one for the UK and the US.
And where I live, we don't even have a PSN to begin with. :laff:

So everyone was hanging dogs on the game during the development, and now that it's out everyone will go and buy it.
Seems like another Dragon Age

Remind me how I do this again.

It's easy. Here's a (

First, create a new user. Log in as that user, then sign up on PSN and after choosing 'Country of Residence' as the US, make up a random US address with a proper post code to complete the registration.
