EDIT: Wow, I just realized I wrote a lot. People probably won't read all of it. Oh well, sorry.
I've just finished the entire Dark Brotherhood quest line (or at least I think so), and I wanted to see what other people thought of it. Personally, I loved pretty much every second of it. Some of the mission setups were great, specifically...
- It's not a mission, but the first time you're approached by Lucien Lachance after a murder. My initiation murder was actually accidental - I saw an orc in a fort, assumed he was hostile, and shot him in the face with an arrow. Then, I wake up deep in some Ayelid ruins to find a creepy hooded guy watching me! Eek.
- Whodunit, the "Clue" mission, where you're locked into a mansion at Skingrad and you have to secretly kill each house guest. I was actually grinning when I got the assignment - yeah, I'm twisted like that. :laff: The actual execution of the concept was a little disappointing, but I like how each guest had a fairly detailed backstory. Was it possible to figure out who the contractor was by listening to each story and fitting it all together? I'm also curious about how different methods worked out. My method: lure old lady to the basement, then kill the dark elf that was in the same bedroom, then kill the Redguard, the let the suspicious Nord take care of the rich guy.
- the "kill Baelin" mission in Bruma, where you loosen a giant moosehead so that it falls on an old man. When I saw his bodyguard, Gromm, crying at Olav's place, that's when I realized that my actions were actually having an effect on the world. I was the cause of this guy's grief! I never really considered what the result of the contract would be, I just saw it as an opportunity for advancement. It was interesting, to say the least.
- the "Flooded Mine" Silencer mission. You have to kill this Argonian hiding in a flooded mine north of Bravil. I swam into the last chamber and popped up to the surface for a peek - I assumed she would be warming her hands at a campfire or sleeping. But no! She was swimming under me, waiting for the ambush! What resulted was a pretty cool underwater swordfight, though she was really no match for me... :)
- sneaking back into the Imperial Prison and killing the elf who heckled you in the beginning of the game. One of my "brothers" suggested simply shooting an arrow through the door, but instead I went up to him and gave him the Night Mother's regards... And THEN I shot him with an arrow! Take that!
- the Purification of Cheydinhal Sanctuary! Wow! I always thought the Khajiit jerk was the traitor, thought he was overplaying the tough-guy attitude to downplay suspicion on himself. I ended up just littering the entire place with Poisoned Apples, and then killed Vincente when he was sleeping since he didn't eat apples. I actually felt really bad for killing all of them - they were so friendly (well, except the jerk who sold me the apples and lockpicks).
- Silencer mission for the melee master in Bruma, a Khajiit named J'Ghasta. (I think). At first, I snuck in his house and put poisoned apples everywhere. I waited until the next day - he still wasn't dead! What?! The next night, I went back in - and was genuinely surprised to find the hatch to the secret training room. I crept up while he was sleeping, pickpocketed him to leave a poisoned apple, and crept out. Poor bugger.
- the end of it all. After recovering the traitor's journal, I thought that naturally I would work with Lucien Lachance to find the traitor out and hunt him down in some really hard-to-infiltrate sanctuary. Fortunately, I was wrong, and something different happened.... Then, seeing Lucien's hanging, bleeding corpse was a little unsettling for me. I know it was just a renamed prop model, but still, I kind of sympathized for him and was a little shocked.
There was room for improvement though, obviously. Some of the Silencer missions were just "kill this person that lives here," there wasn't much of a story or buildup to these contracts. Also, I think it would have been fun to be a Speaker - you could recruit some new members for the guild, establish new sanctuaries, select your own special Silencer to carry out your will - too bad you're bumped up to Listener so quickly. Maybe someone could mod that in?
But... Anyone else have stories to tell? I'm an Elder Scrolls virgin, so maybe doing all of this just felt really new to me even though it really wasn't.

Lets see
Initiation - I got in because I murdered the arena grand champion in the arena. Didn't really have a choice, not like I could back out with all those people watching. Go take a nap in my new raiment, and hey, who's that guy?
Clue - Killed the soldier first, when he was upstairs. Then waited til the rest went to bed, and killed the nord while he lay drinking. The rich dark elf maiden wandered off to the basement, and I got her, then the rich decided the old lady did it, and killed her, announced to me that we were safe, turned around, and got my knife in his back. Sucker.
Imperial Prision Homecoming - I actually used an electric touch spell through the bars. Fry the bastard. Couldn't resist the "You're going to die in here" taunt instead of the night mother one though.
Yeah, I felt bad about the purification, if for no reason other then they were charming for murderers, and some of their conversations were funny. There was one that ended "hahaha, she'll never see her 4th birthday!"
It really did fall apart a bit after the cleansing of the sanctuary, but the ending sequence was pretty darned cool. Certainly the best set of guild quests I've done, and I've done most. Though, the thieves guild finale comes pretty close.

That's how I got into DB too, heh. Funny murderer, killing one of the biggest baddasses in the game.
I liked the quests mentioned and stuff, but when I learned of the whole 'Deaddrop' method he wanted to use I thought it was retarded and susceptible to interception. I'm glad I was right. He was right to die for his stupid notions of 'dead drop'. Yeah, let's put 500g and a super secret note in the middle of a city, and hope no one sees you doing it.
I didn't like the DB (as a guild), so I was glad to kill them all more or less. When the traitor announced himself, I actually killed the other DB members and tried to kill the matron mother, but couldn't QQ. They should've offered that way out of the DB, to end it once and for all and send the crazy ass guy home safely. Perhaps a mod will come out that will offer that.
BTW: I tried arrowing the cellmate guy, and the arrows wouldn't go through the door. He kind of looked at me funny when I shot the gates but whatever.

Initiation?
Well, it seems that I somehow "murdered" one of the arena contestents while fighting him.
Whatever.
I made a point of committing every assassination I could with my Blade of Woe.
In Whodunit I played as a friendly face. I convinced the dunmer to go up to the rich guy's room and thrust my Blade of Woe through her neck. Luckily the redguard didn't see me...and never did as I killed him in his sleep.
The last three were hanging around the table on the second floor so I had to wait until the rich guy and the old lady went downstairs and then the Nord tasted my blade. I convinced the rich guy to kill the old woman and then I stabbed him through his heart.
For that dunmer fool that insulted me in the beginning I unlocked his door...and slashed his throat.
Mmm...I feel an urge to replay the DB quests...

I haven't read through the thread for fear of spoilers. I just started it yesterday, and it seems very fun so far. I'm attempting to ironman with this character so doing the first (pirate) contract was an intense experience.

That's gay. I hope they patch this.

I am trying to as well. What is up w/that weapon anyway? Does it have some secret power? When it was given to me, he made it sound like it was thirsty for blood, and all this. I noticed it is weightless, but is there some secret ability that unlocks after so many kills or somesuch?

Well, I'll just say it gets far better at the end.
Oh, for those of you who have completed the Dark Brotherhood quests, there's discussion (

The whodunit quest was weird for me...
I start of by talking to all the guests, but since i can only ask them about the other guests that doesn't really get me anywhere. After a short while, i hear a door shuting, and then again a short while after. I had up to the bed rooms, and find two of the guests have gone to sleep. Aren't they the enthuastic bunch. Oh well, i sneak up and backstab in their sleep.
Heading back down the rest are now afraid, since they have somehow figured out that two of them have been killed, but of course they aren't suspecting me seeing as i was the only one with the victims... 5 seconds later i hear the door to the bedrooms, and a new clueless guest have entered the mouse trap. Sure enough, he to went to bed. Backstab, and head back down.
The drunken nord is now depressed, and tells me he's going to the basement for one last drink.
This leaves me with the clueless nightelf, which promtly gets a knife in her back.
I now head down in the cellar to join the drunken nord, who's finally figured out that it was me all along(shocker!). But drunk as he is, he dies a few seconds later.... And erh, that was it.
3 sleepy persons, one clueless female darkelf and a drunk nord. What a wild party.

Anybody else discover the home of the guy who commissioned the very first mission you do for the dark brotherhood? He's got a house in Imperial City, and in his basement is a journal and the macabre leftovers of the ritual to contact the brotherhood. Only human heart I've seen in the game.
