I like the idea, too, the more I think about it.
Is tweaking the gameplay really is the biggest job here, the best place to start, though? Seems like that should be further down the road.
Most of the initial work seems like it should be in world-building, giving the lead character a modus operandi, a basic vision for what gameplay would be like, etc... I mean, what would the basic game be? And then let that carry what needs to be done re: tweaking gameplay, new AI, objects, etc...
Or so it seems to me on a first impression (admittedly pretty unreflective so far).
Edit: As long as we're still in the wish phase, if we were going to do this could we please, please, *please* make a serious effort to tweak in horses and horse-riding. :)

SlyFoxx, the Shocklings would kill me if I took on a project that would delay SHTUP even further.
[Benny]Ohhhh...[/Benny] I didn't know you were working on a SS thing. :o I've only really checked out the SS forum on occasion. Hey, good luck with that. I just made that suggestion cause you seem to know a lot about how games work and stuff.

and creating an FM or campaign where you finally play a buffed-up, armor-clad, sword-wielding badass?
We don't have that already? :wot: :sly:
What's wrong with busting in like Joe Palooka and cleaning out the place? :joke:
Actually it's kinda fun to get in between two guards and take them both out at the same time. :D

Well, if we wanta storyline, howabout a loley squire who works his way up the ranks to knighthood, along the way fighting evil and corruption and crap like that.
Also, i agree with taking the light gem away, BUT i think it would be cool/realistic to maintain most of the "hiding in shadows" aspect of the engine. Obviously somoene would need to tweak it to be a bit more becoming, assuming your character is wearing nice shiny armor and not a black cloak (so none of this "walking five feet in front of a person in moderate shadow and they dont see you" stuff.
Probably tweaking with the "Ultimate difficulty mod"s settings might be a good place to start =)

For me the magic of Thief is the stealth element. Take that away and what have you got, another tedious slash and hacker! Games like Thief and Hitman are unforgettable because although they are action games, there is so much more to them than how fast you can push buttons. Although I'm interested to discover that Thief was originally intended to be a mediaeval romp (and no I had no idea), I think the fact that the designers changed tack speaks volumes.
I recently played SS2 for the first time and was hugely disappointed by the gameplay (in fact I found it rather tedious). I have played Thief hundreds of times and still love it, one play through of SS2 and I'm selling it back on eBay.

Wow, did you miss the point.
Also, it might be interesting to have some AI following you around, lending their pathetic sword-fighting skills to your aid. If you want a story to this, the City's war against Blackbrook would be as good as any (and macho military shit is always fun).

while we all talk about how cool this or that would be, what was the original concept of dark camelot? i know very little of it, besides, camelot-->camel-->dromedary camel-->dromed, perhaps someone could give us some better details, or, one of the older members hassle an original dev to see what the vision was, maybe the idea was dropped for good reason.

We must not pursue this goal any further, lest ye entire world be doomed!

without sounding fatal, yes, why was it dropped, perhaps it just wasn't that cool. this isn't a reason not to do it, but something that i would like to know, that may help steer around bad ideas.

The original conception of Dark Camelot was to be set in a sort of mirror-universe Camelot, where King Arthur was the bad guy and you played the hero, Mordred. That's pretty much all we know. The Gamasutra postmortem doesn't even shed much light on the matter--
Quote:
The project began in the spring of 1996 as "Dark Camelot," a sword-combat action game with role-playing and adventure elements, based on an inversion of the Arthurian legend. Although development ostensibly had been in progress on paper for a year, Thief realistically began early in 1997 after the game was repositioned as an action/adventure game of thievery in a grim fantasy setting.
