It was a while ago that I tried it. From memory it would not start at all. Then it was a devil to try and patch because of the directory structure being different (could be also why it wouldn't start). I seem to remember something about the DRM coming into it as well. It was weird.
Anyway the steam route worked so thanks Jason. (For some reason I think this didn't work at one point either. Or I thought it wouldn't. Something about not all regions being on steam. I dunno. Don't quote me. Works now)

I had it on disk on 7 too. No problems at all.

Is it 64bit?
I'm just reaching for any variables I can think of. I've had three old-to-not-very-old games do this installing from disk now. DX: Invisible War, Stalker:SoC and Dark Messiah. (in the former two cases, you know what worked? Copying the install directory holus bolus from my XP machine to the Win 7 machine. Install from the disk and it don't work, not with any compatibility modes, nothin. Yeah, I don't even.... either. Making me think its something simple like registry or some such)
But enough of my problems. I still don't get why the backpedal is so slow. Sure you can dodge sideways, but it seems odd to me. Bladed weapon being swing you want to get right out of that range more than you want to go across it.

My only complaint with it was the embarrassing story and cheesy voice acting, like it was written by and for 14-year-old boys. The actual gameplay was ace, and really hard I found. Maybe I didn't kick-spam enough.
That might have been the case. This game was released at a time when conventional industry wisdom dictated that for a game to be successful you needed to make 14 year olds the target audience.

Dark Messiah is one of those games adored by some (many?) that I utterly failed to get into. I find that this is generally the case with games where much of the fun comes from trying out different approaches to solving the problems - I found that kicking enemies into spikes worked best but got boring, yet I didn't get much enjoyment out of trying out other methods, because the spikes just worked too well. Perhaps it's a lack of self-control or imagination: I'm too utilitarian in games, so if something works well I'll do it, even if it renders the gameplay repetitive as hell.

I couldn't get into Dark Messiah either, and it's a shame because it's sandwiched between Arx Fatalis and Dishonored - both games I adored.

I'm stunned that Henke hasn't made a video montage with "Can I Kick It?" by A Tribe Called Quest as the soundtrack.
Unless he has?

If you loved the spiders in Dark Messiah I suggest the Spider Lair DLC for Metro: Last Light. I just went through that and it's... juicy.

I had the same problem with Dishonored actually, just went through the whole game blinking and backstabbing everyone because there was no incentive to try anything else (and few times I did I ended up messing things up, further discouraging that).
I'm not into sandbox-y games in general (Skyrim/GTA/SaintsRow etc.)

Never could get into Arx Fatalis. My problem is that the "rune" system utterly and completely failed to recognize my spells consistently. That was practicing in a safe spot, let alone actual combat.
