The current factions *aren't* direct renditions of Thief factions (although mappers can use them that way if they wish).
The only one that comes pretty close is the Builder/Hammerite comparison, and that's mainly because both were based heavily on medieval Catholicism.
The pagans of TDM bear little resemblance to Thief Pagans and are actually not a "faction" at all.
The Inventor's Guild has nothing in common with Mechanists other than both building steam and clockwork automatons.
The Hermetic Order of Mages has little in common with Keepers beyond their love of knowledge, magic, and books.
I'd mostly seen the Builder/Hammerites, who I was surprised at serving a "Master Builder," as I had thought beta glimpses had them referring to him only as "God."
I stand corrected on the others, though.

Congratulations on entirely missing the point of TDM.
The point was to bring Thief's atmosphere and gameplay into a newer engine. Bringing over Thief's lore, factions, etc. is completely up to the FM author.

I like the idea of no centralized character. For instance, I loved the Seven Sisters FM. It was a stroke of genius on Lady Rowena's part. The only trouble I had with it was that a fair amount of the objectives and little "side quests" were very out of character for Garrett in my opinion. *I* wanted to do them because I was really digging the level design and I wanted to see everything. But it drew me out of the mission as a narrative because it didn't fit with the character used.
But if people start creating their own characters, this won't be an issue. I'm kind of excited about the idea of a FM maker making up a character and telling a story with an FM, and then continuing that story in their next FM. It'll be like getting to visit and old friend.
I don't think there's a need for a central character at all. But more so than that, I really hope people don't leave their thief "nameless" as previously suggested.

The Name of God
Since the Builders believe in a single god, they often refer to Him simply as, "God" (as in, "God bless thy works"). Just like in our own history, however, there are many other names used for God, including, "The Almighty", "The Lord Builder" or, "The Master Builder". The more formal the occasion, the longer and more elaborate the name tends to get (eg. "The Almighty Lord Builder, Master and Creator of All Things").
(there's really good setting stuff there...I hope people use it)

I'm sorry, but "Farrell" immediately makes me think of either this guy...

I personally subscribe to the 'Unamed Thief' mode.
I don't. Garrett is like one of those old pulp serial heroes, who's always getting up to fantastic adventures with no regard for continuity or good sense. In fact, I tend to feel less interested in FMs where the player is specifically not Garrett.
