I ask because I get the dos box (or dos box look-a-likey) popup and a really quick message of around 5-8 lines where by repeatedly reopening the updater I can make just about out the words......
"compilation" "failed' "BEGIN" "require" "http request" "script/tdm.update.pl line 8"
Andsome heinously long code that looks like a hash checksum, some mention of the DOCUMENTS folder, and lots of other stuff.
Does it not run with XP Pro x64 SP2, or is there something I can do to fix it ?
I tried running it with 'unrestricted access' (no luck there).

I have Vista64 and had no issues whatsoever. I would suspect it's something about your system. Maybe a firewall is blocking the app from downloading the files?

That can happen when an antivirus program "quarantines" the updater, thinking it was a threat. Try checking in your antivirus and add the updater to the safe or trusted list, or unquaratine it.
Also, another thing to try is to do Start - Run - "cmd" (and hit Enter). This will start a DOS box, with the prompt at the "...Owner" folder. (in Vista you might have to first add the "Run command" to the "Customize Start Menu" within "Taskbar and Start Menu Properties")
You'll want to change the directory to your darkmod folder (which you need to have inside your Doom3 folder), but you have to do it old dos style, with "cd" commands:
"cd c:\games\doom3\darkmod"
Once you see the prompt at "C:\GAMES\DOOM3\DARKMOD>" then just type in "tdm_update.exe" and it should run

Many thanks for all of your suggestions. I will try them when I am next at home.
I don't have a firewall (unless you count the Windows XP one ?)
I successfully installed it onto my laptop (Vista Pro), I was wondering, can I just copy that DARKMOD folder to a USB and transfer it to my problem PC ??
Would that work ??

Yes, it will work just fine. All the updater does (for now) is download (and verify) the necessary files to the darkmod folder.

Just to complete the set, I have XP x64 and it works fine :) Although I did have to turn off the XP Firewall for the tm_update file to see the servers and download the files.

Dark Mod works fine for me on Vista64 but DarkRadiant won't work for me sadly.
