Has anyone else tried this?
I'm still fairly uncertain, myself. Certainly the demo is a whole lot more interesting than some of those early videos were, and I'm pleased to see that the semi-randomness we've come to expect from Digital Eel is indeed present, but I must concur with one of the comments at RPS:
Quote:
A lot of the time you can't see any distance ahead of yourself - this the game often feels like I'm “along for the ride” instead of playing it.
(edit: I think that
some of that initial impression was false -- if you make sure you watch the distant track, you
will see things coming and improve your scores -- but only some; there are definitely times when I feel like I have no chance to react to things.)
Admittedly, I wasn't sure of Brainpipe either, took a punt, and absolutely loved it, so I might end up doing the same here.
I'm curious to know what the boss levels are like, at any rate.

As noted in the bargains thread, this can currently be had for half price or less.
I did end up buying it previously, and while it's not my favourite Digital Eel game, I think it's pretty good at what it does. The current sale prices are good, so if you've enjoyed their previous arcade games, now would definitely be the time to grab this.
The previous impressions of only being "along for the ride" are partly due to inexperience, and partly due to the nature of the game. It quite intentionally throws a lot of things at you, and the challenge of the game is in attempting to keep on top of everything that is happening, in order that you will be able to react quickly enough to respond to a given threat or scoring opportunity.
I do think the game has a fairly short lifespan, but Digital Eel know what they're doing, so you can pretty much guarantee that there's enjoyment to be found in anything they put out. Most levels introduce a unique enemy type to make things more interesting, and so you'll probably find there are some levels that you enjoy playing over and over again because the particular combination of elements happens to suit you.
