I just learned that Dawn of War 2 uses GfW Live in some capacity. How this will be implemented is where the fear lies. It could be anything from simply just Achievement support to the full blown Live online multiplayer infrastructure.
If it's the latter then kiss dedicated server support goodbye, it'll be entirely be P2P-based. Achievement support can be easily ignored (ie like how most people have been doing with Fallout 3 for PC), the latter can't.

I wish I was wrong for once.

What dooms it to failure in my eyes more than anything else is the developers saying in interviews that the iteration of the Essence engine being used can't be modded.
The DoW modding community is pretty huge, and there's already a lot of angry murmuring about it.
What I've gathered from the cynics is that it can be modded, but THQ is instituting a policy of pushing DLC pretty hard in future games and that by making modding as difficult as possible they ensure no competition from that sphere for their DLC.
Who knows?
Of course this won't really hurt Dawn of War 2. It'll still sell by the truck load...

That sounds awful. Dawn of War 2 sounds like more and more like a game designed specifically for Xbox 360 everyday. If it wasn't for RTSes being pretty unplayable with gamepad, it likely wouldn't be a PC exclusive (I don't know why that hasn't stopped them though, EA released C&C3 + RA3 onto 360).

If anyone played GoW on PC then they will know that GfW simply does not work, all it does is completely f*ck everything up to the point where in some circumstances you cannot even trust your PC to save your game in SINGLE-PLAYER. I couldnt actually save my game until a patch was released THREE MONTHS later.
Will be a dreadful mistake if it uses GfW...

Games for Windows as I understand it isn't a 'thing' - it's not a piece of code or anything, it's just an agreement by the developers and publisher to have their game conform to certain standards - support for xbox 360 control peripherals being one, I think.

Indeed. GfW is just a (

I miss the days when you had to have minimal knowledge of command prompt in order to play a game.
I think Dawn of War 2 is going to be a bit of a disappointment. I'm probably going to be feeling it first hand since this is one of the games that I may possibly buy at the store when it comes out instead of online a month later for half-price.
Anyone who's been on the Relic forums for a while will see that most of the people there are going to to support DoW2 whatever its flaws. They get pretty rabid if you mention the removal of the resource system, seeing as that it apparently makes it too much like Starcraft.

Games for Windows and Games for Windows Live! aren't the same thing though. You can be GFW without toucing Live, but not vice versa.
