I miss the days when you had to have minimal knowledge of command prompt in order to play a game.
I sure don't.

Seconded.

I'm shocked. No one liked DOS? Wow.

I don't mind doing some technical finanglery to get a game going but fuck me if I ever have to fuck with all the DOS-related shit ever again.

C:\>WIN
Nope!
C:\>WIN!
Nah.
C:\>WIN /?
Missing Himem.SYS
Make sure that the file is in your windows directory and that its location is correctly specified in your config.sys file.
C:\>TYPE CONFIG.SYS
DEVICE=DEVICE
DOS=HIGH, LCARS
SET BLASTER=STUN
C:\>EDIT CONFIG.SYS
Missing Himem.SYS

C:\>ARGHH!!!!
You got that right, baby.

I'm not taking anyone here seriously who didn't have to do some major config.sys/autoexec.bat rogering to get Ultima VII to work... :eww:
Sulphur on 25/11/2008 at 08:23
Oh, that was easy. I did a batch file that swapped the regular/U7 versions when required. Still was a pain in the ass having to reboot to play the game, tho'.
Thirith on 25/11/2008 at 08:28
And you didn't find it difficult to get enough of the 640K base memory freed up to start Ultima VII and, more importantly, Origin's memory manager, while still having the mouse and soundboard drivers loaded? Not even a bit?
*sulks*
Sulphur on 25/11/2008 at 08:39
Sure, there were issues. I recall my great awesome treasure hunt to find a mouse driver with the lowest memory footprint possible sans internet connection.
But it was easy enough to get the game working, if you knew what needed to be done. Also, I think I was slightly masochistic back then, so you can choose whichever explanation seems best. :D

I had to unload my sound just to play Quake on a 486.
But I did it. (It played the CD audio alright, too!)
