I'm not taking anyone here seriously who didn't have to do some major config.sys/autoexec.bat rogering to get
Ultima VII to work... :eww:
I think I had 3 different versions of each for various games. "This one needs maximum memory. That one needs these drivers" and so on. No, I don't miss that. Especially not having to reboot/reconfigure several times before you hit the magical memory limit for a game. Especially when you had 2 MB Ram, with a big part of it being inaccessible to a particular game. Or games with their own memory management which wouldn't work with EMM386.

Every now and then I realise again that I could fit most of my old-school PC games, fully installed, into my current machine's RAM. Sheesh, I remember when 2MB was considered lots of RAM, like "You'll never need that much memory, man! That's what hard disks are for!"

U7 was a dream compared to U8. Bugger me, that one just would not play ball with my system at all.

That, my friend, was your computer trying to protect you. :D
(And I say that as someone who quite enjoyed Ultima VIII...)

I did eventually get it working - the magic systems were quite decent actually, shame about the combat.

I thought the game added some great elements, and I liked the bleakness of the atmosphere. At the same time, Ultima VIII failed miserably at creating a coherent, credible world, which had been a major strength of Ultima VI and Ultima VII especially. I didn't mind the combat so much, since I never felt that this was an integral part of the series; U7 had simplistic combat, and many of the earlier games made it easy enough to abuse the combat system.

Oh god, I had tried to blank U7's combat from my mind. I tended to just stick the party on auto, hit the 'Enter Combat' button and let them swarm away like dogs of war being let off the leash. My problem is that U6 was my first Ultima, and I really enjoyed the combat aspect of that one.

U6's combat was a nice diversion from the exploration & name/job/bye gameplay, but it was very basic. (I think that's one reason why it was a nice diversion - I've never been a big fan of the more tactical battles of, say, Baldur's Gate.) U7's combat seemed downright broken; I don't know anyone who approached that game's combat differently than you did.
Matthew on 25/11/2008 at 16:36
Ohh, Baldur's Gate can be an absolute riot at times though. I enjoy that style of play, I guess. At least I now know I wasn't alone with U7!
I really must replay that; I had started another run of Serpent Isle recently through Exult, but stopped after it appeared that the Silver Seed quest was horribly, horribly broken.
