Aight, there's lots of cool stuff in the horizon. First of all, the recommended updater is now the SixUpdater, which is a software that updates the game really easily and effortlessly. No hazzle with that stuff anymore. Secondly, the forthcoming patch 1.7.1 will fix some major stuff:
* [FIXED] Infected not spawning inside buildings any more
* [NEW] Infected can't attack through walls
* [NEW] Infected can't see through objects any more
* [NEW] Infected visibility increased (but limited by LOS)
* [NEW] Infected attack range increased (but limited by LOS)
* [NEW] Infected can cause greater damage when they hit you
* [NEW] You can hide from an infected chasing you
There's also new mocap animations for zeds for attacking/running, so I am expecting that you can't directly outrun zombies anymore, but a smart player will have a chance to hide from them. Lastly, server lag is reduced.
I haven't played in a while, but this patch will change that. Love the effort that is put into this!

I agree that those updates are great. :)
Rocket has also started discussion threads about spawning weaponless and introducing an intuition system for 'sensing' player killers. Personally i'm for spawning without anything at all, i think it would eliminate spawn camping/noob killing as well as give a clear first goal when you spawn (Get food) as well as encourage sneaking and scavenging. :)

I just had my first hour of Day Z.
3am. :erg: I headed straight towards the sound of flies and doubled my equipment before running straight into the trees and up a hill. Trekked through the pitch black until I hit a road and then took out my map to take a stab at where I was (it's too big to hold while playing so it's now pinned up above the monitor.) My guess was correct and I ended up in Msta. Stealthed around but I didn't have a clue which buildings are enterable, and there were a shitload of zombies. Got chased and ran to a large hut. 4 clean headshots. Got Winchester.
Lost in the woods, sun came up, found signpost, now on my way to Shahkovka. Productive first life so far.

Awesome! I especially like that bit about combining .45ACP between the revolver and 1911, it always seemed weird to me that they were considered mutually exclusive, it's a nice touch that helps add a bit of realism.

Damn they are on top of things, new hotfix that is supposed to come out in a few hours:

I tried playing for the majority of this evening, and every server I joined had no zombies, no players and didn't save character position or inventory.
Others were reporting the same things, yet there's nary a mention of it on the official forums.

You are running arma 2 beta 93825 and dayz 1.7.1? Connecting to 93825 and 1.7.1 servers? I've been playing and haven't had this issue...
