Have the developers (or is it still just the one guy?) done anything to make the game less clunky? I remember the interface was extremely buggy and situational and annoying to use even when working properly.

They are still updating the mod, but with a standalone game on the way, I doubt they're going to do anything drastic like rework the interface. Not exactly sure if the standalone is going to be modified engine or something completely new or what.
