The controls and interfaces is just something you need to learn. The inventory is simple, once you get the hang of it. Collision detection etc. are due to ARMA2's engine being shit on that front - I'd say that is the worst thing about the game. Ladders and doors are the worst enemies in the game and bumping into your friend can break your bones and kill you. Server issues and lag mess it up a bit, but this is just alpha under lot of stress, so it's given.
Crouching et al all have visual cues and you can change the double-tap shift, if you don't like it. This is more about you getting used to the game. I picked up quite easy due to playing Op Flashpoint ages ago, since It's fairly similarly to this. The motion blur thing I found is about the "3d resolution" being too low. I keep it at 100% and it's fine. You can reduce the effects you get when hurt etc. by turning off post-processing.
Not being able to fire when running is part of the game I feel, would make it too easy. The point is that, if you fire, you need to be a good spot and aim carefully. You need to think before hand how other zombies and players will react. If you mess up, you're dead. So most of the time, it's just crawling around, trying to get around zeds.

It doesn't even have a proper physics engine so the collision detection is pretty much hacked together, and it's easy to tell that they took the code straight from Operation Flashpoint (2001).

So after a quick excursion into town where we managed to grab Kuuso an Alice Pack, he logged off and I decided to do my rounds. I hoofed it over to Green Mountain and cleared a couple of hides, where I managed to find some more painkillers, as well as a PDW machine pistol which I decided against taking. Feeling curious, I decided to see if the radio mast at Green Mountain was viable this time. Last time I'd investigated it, I found that someone had blocked the entrance with barbed wire.
This time there was no barbed wire, so I started edging towards the tower around the zombies.
That's when I saw a body plummet from the sky.
Looking up to see what had happened, I saw 2 bandits running around the towers middle platform, both armed with sniper rifles.
I didn't fancy my chances, and I wasn't not sure they'd spotted me, so I ran back into the woods.
Well, at least I got to see a man fly today :)

So I was finally able to run this, after redownloading OA 4 fucking times.
Installation's surprisingly painless with the (
http://www.worrom.com/) DayZ Updater Tool - go for that if you're lazy like me, guys who're still to jump in.
I've still to really play it. I hopped on a server for a bit - Duck wasn't kidding when he said night time was
dark. Jesus, there are no lights, not even the stars outside help. I think I was on some sort of lonely knoll, and it was so quiet, darkness so thick you could cut it with a knife. The only sounds I heard were my footsteps and the occasional sough of the wind as it picked up. There were some flares lit nearby, and nothing else. It was dark, empty wilderness. I didn't see a single zombie, but you know, that just made the entire thing scarier, the thought of dark unbidden things rushing towards you at any given moment, without you being able to even see what the fuck.
So I logged out.
I'll return in the morning, thanks.

Try an EU or US server Sulphur. Those should be still daytime.

The inventory system is pretty bad but simple and you do get used to it after a while. Clicking things in your inventory doesn't really do anything but move and drop stuff.
Using any item in your inventory is done via the mouse wheel menu, if you can use or interact with something (Both inventory and and world items like doors or ladders) it will be in the menu. Changing packs will be in the menu if you aim at the pack, as will refilling water, using meds, everything.
To throw stuff you use the F key, pushing it will cycle through throwable items and your weapons, basically that's how you select what your left mouse button will do. Throwable items can be flares, grenades or cans/bottles (for distraction).
Moving backwards as you fire helps a lot if chased by zombies, you can't move and shoot unless you AIM though, click the right mouse button once to aim.
Pressing V makes you climb over things that aren't too high like garden fences and also the barbed wire. If you have a toolkit you can remove barbed wire (or place it) zombies can't get over it so it can be used to seal off areas.
I like the movement controls of arma 2 a lot, they are quite efficient and configurable. I've set a key to crouch if i press once and prone if i double tap it, another key is set to stand up straight (Only use it in the wilderness, too noisy, you can run from zombies crouched just as well as standing up). The double tap function makes it possible to have a lot of functions bound to a small amount of keys, i think it's brilliant. :) By the way, climbing anything, ladders or fences, will cause you to stand up so don't forget to crouch again afterwards or you could get yourself killed.
Some video settings can make things a lot easier. Turn off Post processing to get rid of motion blur (It's an effect that sucks, never understood why all games implement it nowdays), at night you can set HDR to Maximum to see a lot better and also raise gamma if needed (Apparently it's not half as dark on nVidia cards as on Radeon cards so Radeon users might want to do the gamma thing). Nighttime is only pitch black until 1am or so though when the moon starts to light up everything.
I've found that i actually prefer playing at night, daylight makes me paranoid as hell while the darkness gives me the edge. :) I never even use flares but i do use flashlights if i can find them.
Something that helps a ton with navigation when you respawn is the bleeping text in the bottom right corner, it tells you the closest city and the closest village.
Just look the village up on a map and you'll have a pretty good idea of where you are. It's always on the southern or eastern coast.

Fuck.
Just logged in to find the main server has reset. I still have all of my gear, but it's reset my position to my spawn point, all the way over in Kamyshovo.
Looks like I'll be doing some hiking to get anywhere near Duck & Kuuso again :E

Guys, I'm recruiting TTLGers on Steam to form a bigger TTLG survival group. We usually log on any given server with a decent ping that has daytime, since your characters positions/condition/equipment are constant in all servers (save a reset like the one Malf mentions...damn). Seriously, nighttime may be tense -and- cool, but only until we get some proper nightgear.
Also, big courtesy and help from Malf's part:(
http://www.maplib.net/fullmap.php?id=14237&legend=1) a link to the map in the game that you can zoom in and out using your Steam prompt window.
Yes, it's cheating a bit, so feel free to use it or not, but since the map in game has all names in Russian and this one at least has the translation also, well....eff it.

Having just performed a VERY successful raid on the hospital in Berezino, I'm now heading back out in to the wilderness, making my way towards Devil's Castle. Mostly, I just want to see it, but everyone else is welcome to join me there. I know Duck's on his way right now.
Signing off for the evening now.
Mr.Duck on 20/5/2012 at 01:41
Just reached Devil's Castle and logged off at the edge of a small forest south of it.
w00t!
:D
Shit's getting awesome, lads.
