I'm back at work now, so will only be able to play for a short period before work (about 7:00 to 8:20) and from 19:00 after work during the week. The weekends though are free reign.
Obviously, evening play is going to be restricted because of dark European servers and flooded US servers. I tried playing a bit in the dark last night, but even with the suggested gamma, brighness & HDR tweaks, the game was unplayable without a light source or NVGs, hence my trip to the NW airstrip this morning.
Oh yeah, the next update is imminent by the way, and rocket will be removing bandit skins, so you won't know bandits by sight any more :|

There are a fair amount of permanent daylight servers and some with extended daytime, at least in europe lately.
I'm on CET, i have no idea what your timezones are. :)

Those are getting (

To be honest, I think he's making a rod for his own back here; nighttime in DayZ is unrealistically dark and all but unplayable if you have no source of light. You just have to look at which servers are fullest at what times of day to realise the player base is following the daylight.
If he's not careful, this could be a major point of failure for the mod. Most people will only be able to play during the week after work, and if they can't play on a daylight server, they simply won't play.

Nah, i've been spending enough nights in unpopulated areas and woods to know that it really is that dark without electric lights around. I've been lost for hours and had to orient myself by the sound of my footsteps, hearing animals i couldn't see just a few feet from me. So it's realistic hehe.
I actually like playing in the dark myself. :) Maybe it's a matter of getting used to, i think having countless hours of Thief play in me is the reason i like it. :) Playing in a dark room helps a lot too of course.
But for a team of players, daylight would definately be more fun.

Are there never any clear moonlit nights? A full or near-full moon should provide enough illumination for you to see more than a pitch-black horizon.

You may like it, but you just have to look at server populations to realise the vast majority of players don't.
It also varies wildly depending on what graphics card you're running. For example, on my system with a 580GTX, with gamma, brightness and HDR maxed out, the outside areas are just about playable, but interiors are still completely black, and no, this is in no way realistic. I spent 25 years of my life in the countryside and never saw a night as dark as the ones in Day Z.

Well i'm not going to argue your experiences, i don't know where you're from.
Day Z i spot on for the location it takes place in though, i live in an area much like it and spent a lot of time in the wilderness hiking and such so it just seems strange to me that it's so hard to believe that nights are dark where there are no lights. :)
The moon is the only lightsource out there and if it's not up, what would illuminate your surroundings you think? Stars? No.
In Day Z the moon doesn't come up until after midnight, it makes things a lot brighter. :)
Rocket, who made the mod seems to be an idealist though and he has an agenda and a purpose with it. I don't see him changing his vision because of public demand and judging from what he's said himself he doesn't have any commercial interest whatsoever.
He's doing it as a way of giving the game publishers of the world the finger and to show them that taking a risk and do something unconventional is how you give people a better game. Mind you, the mod became popular BECAUSE of unforgiving difficulty, unrestricted freedom and a realistic environment (Including dark nights) and changing any of that because it attracts hordes of players who wants the light version would kill its brilliance. :)
Oops, i was shot and liberated of my good gear while writing this haha. :) Have to admit that it feels better to not have to worry about that anymore. ;)

That's pretty dumb, right now surviving at night is extremely difficult because the zombies don't have any problem seeing or hearing at night. If he wants people to play at night, it'll have to be changed to be actually feasible. Right now, your options are flail in the dark or drop a flare and get swarmed.
