Picked this up for $20 during the Steam Autumn sale. Really glad I did. Despite the fact that:
-The menu system is awful.
-The voice acting is horrible. (although appropriate for a zombie B-movie type game)
-The controls are (initially) awkward and uncomfortable.
-The money-based upgrade system is, at the very least, perplexing.
-The quests are mostly of the stupid fetch/retrieve or "turn this thing on for me" variety.
-The map system is mostly useless.
The game is a blast. As far as zombie games go, to me this is way more fun that Dead Rising ever was. Hell, the game is worth $20 just for the ability to drive around a large island and plow through hordes of zombies with your pickup truck. But there's a pretty cool weapon repair/modify/upgrade system that seems promising (haven't used it extensively yet), and melee combat is equally fun as long as you don't just stick to the base weapons, which degrade quickly and can be frustrating.
This game is fun enough to have distracted me (for the moment) from Skyrim, that's saying a lot.
Get it - and stick with it. The prologue portion almost had me permaquitting with a finger hovering over the uninstall button. For some lame reason, they devs tried to put you to sleep in the first 10 minutes by collecting money and items out of about 50 suitcases before I even encountered my first zombie. But once you complete a few missions, get a decent weapon and find a vehicle, you'll be hooked.

Got it also on the Steam sale, though at $25. I'm sure it'll be worth the price of admission by keeping expectations moderate-to-low :)

Its much better with other players, although I found the fact that as your weaponry got more powerful so did the zombies really annoying.

Also picked it up on the Steam Sale. Really enjoying it and like the majority of the changes I'm seeing from the alpha version that I saw a while back. If you see me running around, feel free to drop in, but for god's sake identify yourself if you do! Somebody named 'Lex' jumped into my game last night and started activating quests and skipping through all the dialogue and I had no idea who the fuck they were and I ended up kicking them out.

Just played the first hour and a half of it, got to the life guard house. First impressions: the intro is wonderfully dark. Reminds me of Prodigy's Smack My Bitch Up musicvideo. My disapointment at finding out I won't actually be playing the drunk asshole from the intro dissipated as soon as I started listening to the backstories of these other sad bastards you get to play as. Each one of them is like a Tom Waits song come to life. I ended up picking the one-hit-wonder rapper desperately trying to get another 15 minutes of fame.
The first person melee works as well as any first person meleeing game I've ever played. Combat feels sufficiently meaty. Getting in good headwhacks matter. You can throw shit at zombies. If you nail em with a throwing knife or whatever you can yank it back out after they've gone down. Overall the gameplay feels more like Dead Rising than anything else.
So yeah. Bottomline: I'm loving it so far.
Question: Am I supposed to be saving some of these energy drinks for later? I was gulping down every one I came across early on if I so much as had a little papercut that needed healing before I realized that items might not be respawning. Do they?

They do respawn if you leave the area and come back eventually.

Thanks for the info bob.
Wrong drunk asshole Koki. The throwing dude is the ex-footballer(or something) right? He shows up in the intro, as does the 3 other playable characters, but I'm talking about the drunk asshole from who's point of view the intro plays out.

It's called an out of body experience.
