I just hit chapter 12.
For all the fact that this is, essentially, a different sort of game from DS1, it is still very much Dead Space and if you're at all a fan of the setting this is every bit worth your time. Is it more actiony? Eh, maybe a little. I'm really not seeing that much of a difference between DS1 and DS2 though- the general flow of it is about the same: a steady trickle of one or two, then suddenly 3-4 at once, then a trickle, then it's a cage match... the only difference is, there are slightly more enemies and they tend to be the fairly difficult kind. The higher monster count I think can at the very least be blamed on the fact that you're in what's essentially a giant city with a high population. More people = more corpses = more monsters.
Is it less scary than the original? Your mileage may vary. I haven't really seen much on the level of Lethal Devotion or End of Days, but as always sound plays a big part in driving up atmosphere and tension. I would go so far as to say that the sound design is this series' biggest strength, far more than its plot (which is at least halfway interesting) or any of its gameplay mechanics.

I'm in the 9th chapter now, first time on Zealot.
The game became easier for me than it was in the beginning - I just found the right weapons and tactics for various situations and enemies. Stasis + saw works like a charm, including black necros, and what's important it's very economy, it easily dismebers several necros with only one blade. Alt. fire of the linear gun (time mines) makes wonders too if used in proper places. Against solo necros stasis + one shot at leg(s) from laser cutter + stomps works good and let to spare ammo. As result of above tricks, ammo is more than enough for all 4 guns I use now (cutter, linear gun, machine gun, saw). Also, I have abundance of medical kits and stasis packs, I sold about 10-20 medikits already, as well as 5-10 stasis packs, and still have plenty of them in my storage.
If I waste too much ammo or health, or use wrong weapon for a situation, I usully just restart, checkpoints are placed rather good.
And the game itself became more interesting too.

So, another fan *) here, just completed DS2.
I feel that some thing was missing for me, too, in comparison to the first game. My best guess is that it has to do with some missing tension. There were some calmer parts, too, but not as similar (interestingly enough,
again on the Ishimura).
I was also missing some musical drones from the first or huge 'scary' machinery as the centrifuge or the main engine of the Ishimura. We've had the
solar panels, but that emotional high immediately went to a low with my botched jet pack flight. After getting splattered it just feels like remembering proper dance-dance-revolution moves :erg: .
Also, stompers from Galaxy Quest anyone?
Speaking of stomping, The corpse-stomping felt weird - made it more of a splatter movie than a tension horror.
*) I also own the two movies, Salvage comic and the book Martyr, which set you up with further story background as well - I finished both the second movie and Martyr right before I got DS2, so I had a perfect pick-up there.
In sum I'm glad to have played it, although I was missing some experience I've had with the first. Might be related what gets explained in (
http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/zero-punctuation/2737-Dead-Space-2) Zero Punctuation.
I'll probably get the next one (on PC) they probably will get out of this cash cow as well, but I hope they can convince me again with that then.

A good game, and definately better than the first one. The biggest flaw of the first game is still there though. The levels are still as linear as they were and the exploration element is almost nonexistant. In light of this the multiple playthroughs mechanic feels cheap and tacked on.

More linear. In the original there sometimes was a hub and several possible ways to go, you could choose which way you go first and sometimes even which goal to accomplish, AFAIR.
Anyway, I finished 10th chapter yesterday i.e. Ishimura (on Zealot) and the difficulty distinctly became harder compared to previous chapters.
Still more than enough ammo as I primarily use ripper as my main weapon which is the most ammo effective weapon IMO, but enemies already start to overwhelm by numbers. by the way, the longest chapter for now, it took 2 days to beat it.
Graphically, what the game lacks in texture resolution and architecture details it makes up in lighting and volumetric smoke.

Beat it.
Final chapers were easier than I thought, just froze them and run. By the way, didn't have to buy any ammo or medkids during the game, more than enough even on Zealot if you use appropriate weapons in approproiate situations. Actually, I even sold lots of medkids, stasis packs, and ammo as well to buy additional nodes.
Excellent survival shooter, but the story is cheap.

PC patch out now. In light of the hacked completed save, they seem to have unlocked all of the premium (on console) equipment/weapon packs freely for everyone. Who's to bet that the muppets haven't addressed the v-sync + mouse lag engine bug?

Since EA has finally released a patch that apparently addresses almost all of the complaints - including unlocking pretty much all the DLC - and since DS2 just dropped in price by $20, I no longer have any reservations about buying the game. I'll worry about whether we get the "Severed" DLC later.
I didn't buy DS1 until it hit the bargain bins, because of the way they handled the PC version then. (DRM with limited activations and no revoke, unable to remap keys, ignoring all complaints). So now that EA have decided to stop fucking over people playing on the PC, I'll support them.
There is one thing that still isn't unlocked, though. Even with the patch. The "conduit rooms" are still locked, and supposed to remain a console exclusive. Only, there is a way to unlock those as well.

Grab the above file (before it disappears) and follow the instructions regarding the .DAT file. Adding this file to your DS2 folder unlocks the conduit rooms. You don't need the save file, the patch takes care of that.
So with the patch and the .DAT file, as far as I know: you have all the DLC the console versions got. For free.

Still, if the press hadn't had picked up on the story of a paraplegic being unable to play DS2 because he couldn't bind move forward to the mouse, we likely wouldn't have seen a patch at all. A developer shouldn't have to be motivated by negative press coverage before they fix their broken products.
Until they address the "Severed" debacle, Visceral is still very much belongs the on shit-list of developers who treat PC gamers like dirt, IMO.

From what I'm seeing on the Dead Space forums where the patch was released, it's not a full fix. The only advanced suit added is the engineering suit - the rest still lack schematics and you still don't get the hand cannon after beating hardcore.
