Forget it deth, it's Aja-town.

A place beyond any logic, A movie beyond sheer comprehension. David's Lynch's Aja.

What don't you understand? Dead Space's mouse controls are sluggish and have bizarre acceleration. I just assumed it was because they didn't want one version to be easier than the other, or else that the game just wasn't designed with faster controls in mind.
You can "uh david lynch's aja" all you want; it's not as though three-quarters of this thread is complaining about weird mouse movement or anything.

The people having problems with mouse control just haven't gotten the mouse to behave properly- when it's working right it completely pisses all over controllers. It allows for precision shots, which are very necessary when trying to take out necromorphs by hitting them in the arms or tentacles. Trying to do that on a controller is a fucking joke.

Dethtoll is right, those people who've had problems didn't know how to configure their hardware properly.
Tweaking mouse performance is largely overlooked by most people, outside of in-game sensitivity settings.

I've played DS through 4 times on mouse + keybord and I've never had any trouble with sluggishness or bizarre acceleration. The only issue I had was the v-sync, but all that required was turning off, no other tweaking was necessary.

I found myself playing through it with the 360 controller mainly; but for those tougher sequences (ie: the final boss battle and asteroids) I woult switch over to the mouse and keyboard.
Other than that, and the vsync issue mentioned I had no tweaking to do. What surprised me also was I played this on high graphics settings and it ran beautifully.

So it seems I should go with the PC version, then. That's just as well, actually, because I can get it new, including shipping, for less than a dollar more than I would have paid for my friend's PS3 copy. If the widescreen display is that much cooler I could just switch monitors for the time being.

And if you REALLY need the controller, just plug one into the PC. Anyway, the PC controls are fine. I had to muck around with the sensitivity and X-Sync, but that took all of 10 minutes and I was fine. I couldn't IMAGINE playing the asteroid sequnce(s) with a controller, and I play Xbox every single day.

I suppose I could crank the external mouse settings to full, but I don't have to do that with any other game. Even at maximum speed the mouse is still slow in DS, and no slider can fix the weird acceleration. And I'm using a high-quality mouse, so that isn't the issue.

If that were true the game would be unplayable; hitting the limbs isn't optional.
