No I beat it on normal the first time and it unlocked impossible. unless I'm remembering wrong.

You mean there are settings above easy??
Dead Space was the only game I played this year which actually had me nervous to load up (played it on the pc) - heck; it even had me addicted for a while.
Very excited for the sequel.

I know that you're being facetious, but I have to say that I found Dead Space impossible to enjoy on Normal difficulty, it was just too easy. Bumping it up to Hard did the trick though, it felt like a true horror game. I actually had to manage my ammo usage effectively, the melee stomp became a necessary tactic. A Necromorph mob was actually a real threat.
There was one TTLG'er who lost his save so I sent him mine, he was alarmed by how much tougher the game was on Hard. He particularly had trouble with that big boss which was clogging up the filtration system on the Hydroponics deck.

same with statis, on lower difficulty levels it's nice to have, on impossible it's essential and I constantly ran low, just like it should be in a survival horror game

That boss
was horrible though, and the hardest (or perhaps most frustrating is more accurate as it was just a case of repeating the same tactic exactly time and again) part of the game by a great margin.

The asteroid sequence was easy, even on impossible. Final boss was hard, but in a good way as while it needed some repetition it didn't need interminable repetition.
Finished the game twice, dethy dear fellow.
