I got past the asteroid part on the 3rd attempt on my 2nd runthrough (as far as I remember that is, it's been a while), and my eyesight sucks.

Honestly, the astroids segments didnt really bother me - i just viewed them as a diverting arcade moment to split the game up in places.
What I found particularly grating at times was the fact that I had all these powerful weapons at my command yet seemed to play 80% or so of the game with the basic laser cutter...and I felt guilty at not utilising the entire arsenal at my disposal.
Yeah thats right - I felt GUILTY at my choice of alien/zombie killer weaponry.

I used just the Pulse Rifle and it was a hell of a lot easier than the Plasma Cutter. Since many of the fights in Dead Space are 1-on-1 attacks by random monsters, the automatic fire of the rifle leads to a succession of flinches until the enemy falls over without ever having gotten close enough to fight.

Well, aside from the Wonder Twins pudchugging the day away, the pulse rifle is really all but useless until you crank up the damage. The plasma cutter is perfect early on, but by the end of the game you'll want to switch to the line gun, which, with damage mods, rips enemies to pieces like you wouldn't believe.
