answer to thread title is NO

We sorta figured that out a ways back.

Beg to differ.
It may be very different to SS but if it doesn't remind you of it your pattern recognition needs neuro-assessment. It's different enough to not be SS, but reminiscent enough to make you think "what if...?".

Dead Space is fucking awesome bros
truer SS2 spiritual sequel than Bioshock ever was (SubJeff knows the score)

I'd agree too, but the combo of me, dethtoll and SE agreeing on something is surely mentioned somewhere in Nostradamus or Revelations as one of the signs of impending apocalypse and I do not want to tempt fate.

Just picked this up as a Steam special on Subjeff's recommendation and I am going to have to join everyone else who has been recommending it. I though Bioshock was fucking terrible but this is fantastic. It is pretty linear etc, but still a reall good romp. The combat mechanic alone is a lot of fun. (Once I learned to take my time when shooting and that stasis was AoE).
I'm playing through on hard, and haven't been particularly inspired to pick up the rifle or line gun yet. Should I bother? The plasma cutter seems pretty OP as it is.
Also, was I supposed to somehow equip the Captain's Rig or was it just a plot item? It's not in my inventory, though I am sure I picked it up.

This game would really benefit from a 1st person mod. I know there isn't one but one can wish.
I found the combat a little difficult to get used to with over-the-shoulder camera and agree that it could use a first-person mod, but at the same time I like the way you can see the whole rig and the hologram-inventory system

Uh... if something is 'very different' from something else, yet 'reminds you of it' that does not make it 'the new something'. I mean, it's set in a spacebase inhabited by monsters that used to be the crew, but it reveals how dried up the old SS2 gland has become if people are prepared to welcome a game every bit* as intelligent as resident evil 4 as its successor.
*well, slightly more I guess.
Sulphur on 19/6/2010 at 12:38
Didn't we already do this? Sure, Dead Space is a great game on its own and as a 'spiritual successor' and all that, but if it had contained the words 'System Shock' in the title, we'd have all come down on it like a ton of bricks.
Vivian on 19/6/2010 at 12:51
I have no idea, and I'm fucked if I'm trawling a million page thread to find out. I just don't really see why they have anything to do with each other, other than space monsters.
Sulphur on 19/6/2010 at 13:03
Oh, they've definitely got more in common than that. There's plenty of homage (or ripping off, depending on your perspective) to SS2 in things like some of the settings, mechanics, and certain story decisions.
