Bought it, playing on Hard. The Pulse Rifle is still an excellent weapon, and I can't for the life of me find a use for the Ripper, but keep it because I get tons of ammo drops for it.

I found the opposite. The Pulse Rifle was useless against anything except bosses. Meanwhile, a ripper with a few upgrades could cut through several advanced necromorphs like a hot knife through butter. Add the ammo glitch into account and the ripper becomes the best weapon in the game outside of the Plasma Cutter.

Also, don't you find more ammo for the guns that you're currently carrying?

Yes, the game prioritises ammo drop types based on the weapons you're currently carrying.

Ha ha. Was reading catbarf's post thinking "he doesn't know, does he?"
I'm using the Plasma Cutter and the Line Cutter at the moment. The Ripper just seems... unreliable.

I acquired myself a copy of the novel. Dead Space Martyr, and its pretty gripping. Some of it is pretty predictable, but it's not a bad backstory. The main character is Altman and it's about the original Marker and the birth of unitology.
One thing I like about this franchise is how it bridges across so many forms of media. I've gone back and replayed the No Known Survivors puzzles (not in earnest, just to experience the narrative) and after I'm finished reading the book i'll watch the web comics again. Then there's Downfall, which I actually bought. It wasn't very good to be honest but it was a decent attempt at a Peter Cheung type "anime". Extraction was a pretty decent light gun game ((
http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=129149) my review) and I haven't played through Ignition yet, just the demo. I don't think the game play has me riveted to pay 5 bucks for it, maybe i'll watch the cutscenes on youtube or something.
I just like how much thought they've put into it and the effort apparent in the little things, like the easter eggs etc. The game has its flaws, for sure. But this is how a canon should unfold.

This actually applies even more to the Ripper than any other weapon, hence why I mentioned "ammo glitch". It's been noticed by a lot of players. but simply having it in your inventory will cause the majority of ammo you come across to be ripper blades. I have no idea if this was intentional. Regardless I never needed that many, so it ended up being a great source of cash.
Also VA while I really like most of the stuff they've made for Dead Space, Downfall was just terrible. Bad writing, bad voice acting, bad art, and bad animation. Also while everything else fits together (DS, the motion comics, Extraction, Martyr) Downfall contains numerous errors in its story and continuity compared to the rest of the series.
They're coming out with a new movie to bridge DS and DS2, but so far it just looks like Downfall all over again.

If you got the balls and put some valuable upgrades into it the Ripper is one of the more ammo efficient weapons in the game. But you also have to practice, I suck at using it and therefore need to stasis every time I intend to use it. I've read that people can take out brutes with just 2 or 3 blades.

Downfall sucked
I pretty much agree with you. I just didn't want to go into details. I bought it on DVD and after being disappointed with it decided to download ResiEvil: Regeneration. Turns out I should've bought Regeneration and Downloaded Downfall, because REgeneration was quite good.
I'm probably going to watch the new one when its out... once. I doubt I'll buy it. Finished Martyr by the way. I enjoyed it.
