So, how does character advancement work? I hear there are sparse weapon upgrades, but with so few weapons there's gotta be something else. Do you get new skills or stats?

Well, PC Zone said it had "dogshit mouse controls", so there's one.
One of the crew at RPS disagrees with the "dogshit mouse controls" comment.

I think Log is mad. The mouse controls were totally fine. The aiming system is a little obtuse to begin with, but it only took a couple of fights to understand it.

Oh? That's good to hear, I'm still on the fence about this game. Thanks!

Wtf do they mean by "aiming system"??????
mothra on 19/10/2008 at 10:33
you have to "raise" your gun so you can shoot, that also gives you the ammo count on the weapon if you wanna know it. so no left-click -> shoot. that was made pretty clear in the gameplay vids, you can clearly see a difference between "walking idle" and "walking aiming"
june gloom on 19/10/2008 at 11:34
No big deal, I mean who the fuck just walks around with their gun pointed ahead 100% of the time?
Gambit on 19/10/2008 at 11:43
But where is the need of walking idle if it makes you vulnerable ?
Do you walk faster if idle or do you need to enter idle mode before changing weapons ? Because otherwise I would just stay in aiming mode 100% of the time.
Trance on 19/10/2008 at 14:28
I do believe you move faster without your gun deployed.
ChickenMcOwnage on 19/10/2008 at 18:02
Ohhh okay, thanks for that. I thought it was some silly console thing like you can't free-look or can't look up or you have to press a button to target something.

Bad news? The controls are 2nd to the worst controls we've seen ever since Path of Neo came to the PC platforms. The smoothness compared to consoles is just not there, and from what we can tell it doesn't seem like a patch can fix most of the issues. Inventory stack access becomes frustrating when fighting with monsters and aiming for on-the-fly changes. The controls just aren't smooth. When contacting EA Redwood Shores regarding these issues:

Dead Space for PC is an equivalent experience to that on consoles. The controls are different and customizable, but we feel it's in the best ability for the players to match what the console experience is like.
It's ironic that it needs to be argued that it matches the console experience from the controls in EA's eyes. The fact isn't a matter of customization as much as it's just not feasible to do most of the mapped controls on the keyboard and still maintain a fluid transition between interface and gameplay. If you have a console, go with the console version of Dead Space. The PC one is just not the same thing. If you're tight on $20 extra for the console version, rent it and then settle for the PC one after. It's such a shame.
