Ending is shit.
Just beat it last night. Major let down. Half baked story never takes off. Combat is fun for sure, especially as you upgrade your weapons. There's no re-playability, unless you REALLY want to play through it again with a new suit and your same weapons from your last play through.
A fantastic rental.

You guys seem to be having a really good time with it, so I bit the bullet. I just bought it (the PC version, natch) on eBay for 30 bucks!

I played a little bit of Dead Space last night. Just the beginning. So I can't really give a proper opinion on it yet.
What I can say, is that it looks pretty gorgeous at 1680x1050 and runs very smoothly on my setup. (Athlon X2 6400+, Radeon 3870, 2GB)
And the mouse control is NOT dogshit as long as you disable VSync and have a decent high-DPI mouse. It's perfectly fine, as far as I'm concerned. The keyboard controls, on the other hand . . . what the fuck, EA? Since when was hard-mapping keys ever a standard in PC games? Let me decide how I want to arrange the keyboard controls, thankyouveryfuckingmuch. The game never should have shipped without being able to customize all the keyboard controls. This needs a patch, yesterday. Funny enough, the devs promised fully customizable keyboard controls.

GP: Is the PC version optimized well for the mouse and keyboard users amongst us, or is Dead Space really something that only suits the controller crowd?
Rich Briggs: We spent a lot of time making sure the PC version had the best control scheme possible. We tested various configurations and implemented what we felt worked best for the mouse and keyboard. In addition, the keyboard controls are able to be remapped by the player.
Also, I had to create a blank text file called joypad.txt, because the game automatically checks if you have ANY gamepad plugged in. Which immediately overrides the mouse control. Which meant my camera was spinning like crazy. Thanks for not giving us a "Disable Joystick/Gamepad" option in the menus, either.
Elements of the UI, and the situation with the keyboard controls, cry out "lazy console port". Like when you select the resolution, you have to click through all of them one by one (i.e. the interface expects you to be using a stick) while the resolution changes each time. Rather than being able to use a drop-down menu, and immediately pick the one you want.
Yet, the game runs superbly and looks very good. Maybe the textures could have been upgraded to make them look a little better, but overall Dead Space on the PC is very sweet to look at. So, at least they seem to have put effort into optimizing it for PC.
It's a bit of a schizophrenic PC title, then. But so far, I'm liking it.

Try playing it with Sigur Ros track 8 behind it. Just do it.

Finished it today :)
Yeah, they dropped the ball a bit with the ending , particularly, I was mainly annoyed that they did the old tired, NOT scary and boring "BOO!" scare of a monster f-ing the main character up just when he thought he was "safe", didn't get extra credit for said monster being his dead babe, but the twist was considerably nice, though not entirely unexpected. It did had a deeper impact on me mainly because I saw the entire webcomic series beforehand, so, yeah.
Also, last boss may be a redux from the 1st one, but damn if it isn't awesome looking.
Hope they expand more on character and story development next game (yes, I want a sequel :)), after all there's still the -real- alien marker to consider back on earth ;) And not keep him voiceless, I didn't mind 90% of the game, but the last episodes I really felt at times he should at least grunt. Oh well.
I don't regret buying it and I'll gladly replay it in the future.

lol, talk about over analyzing, what an idiot.

played the first 3 levels yesterday. I am not impressed. starts good but never takes off (for now).....cautious (don't know if I should buy it). FC2 looks more like a keeper for me. graphics are very low-res, no wonder it runs smooth, it's a little sub-par for such a major title.

It's on pair with Doom3 but with some additional fx like smoke and lightning that can look really great and be very atmosperic. It probably has the best particle effects i've seen in a game so far.
I wish the textures were more hi-res, its probably only STALKER which has left me somewhat satisfied in that area though, so it was no surprise.
