i bought the flamethrower right away and FC2 beats it in effects. well, graphics aint everything, so far the story is OK and better done than in FC2 (easy since deadSpace is a corridor shooter) but the "horror" or "tension" did not get to me. all is there, pop-up aliens, menacing doorways and brooding atonal music but right now, I'm still sitting laid back, observing and waiting for the game to grab me and put my nose up to the screen, transfixed without letting go. does not happen. I did not die either up until now. had no ammo problems, no energy problems, bought already all the weapons and new armor when being on level 4 ? puzzles are nice. zero-g is nothing new, play some hl2 mods.
but I'm a sucker for SciFi and Spaceships so I will keep going.
should have been done in 1st person. 3rd person doesn't get me excited or scared, sorry.

Stop playing on the chicken difficulty.
EDIT: Of course, never mind what I said of you already play on hard...

i play on normal. I never played a game on easy, almost ever on hard besides STALKER/FC2 atm which i play on the hardest.
this game I wanted to start with the default setting, best way to judge a game, of course I will restart (if I buy it) on hard.
at least on normal my "safe" is full to the brink with ammo and my character can't carry much more. and there seems to be some difficulty scaling, I saw that if you let yourself artifically be hurt down to 1 healthbar the next enemy always/mostly gives you a health pack ?
me don't like. if I'm full on health I always get ammo.

Still, maybe you should ramp up the difficulty if you find it too easy...

yeah, of course I will. it's just that they never sell a game with the hardest difficulty in mind. it's the default they sell and should be representative of the game they intended. and btw, where is all the gore they promised ? I mean it's there, yeah and it looks mushy/squishy but where are the ridiculous arterial sprays covering your rig from top to bottom ? where are the 3 litre blood splashes, if you squash some corpses lying around with your stomp, they just seperate at premade seams but there is no blood flowing over the floor and flowing down into puddles. FEAR did this better imo.
but the design-continuity in ship and weapons is very good, 2ndary functions are awesome (I'm talking pulse rifle and buzz saw here)

Finished it on normal, and it does feel like there are too many resources. Still an awesome game, though.
Also, how the hell can the guy run in zero g? Did I miss some explanation about magnetic boots or something? Cavernous chambers are NOTHING compared to this:mad:

lol, talk about over analyzing, what an idiot.
I loved Antwiler's review of The Thing game, funny as hell. Even though I don't agree with him. The Thing wasn't THAT bad.
But I agree that he's being a bit anal in his review of Dead Space.

Tried the game a bit, and surely liked it - I'm a big fan of RE4. Its description as 'Doom3 meets RE4' seems quite accurate. Unexpectedly good product from EA it seems.

Heads up: If you don't have magnetic boots, you can't
walk in zero-g.

True to an extent but not really intended for gamers like us right? I always go for hard mode in games simply because I do play a lot of them and consequentially have gotten fairly skilled at them. Not just pure twitch skills either but I also a more intuitive understanding of game mechanics and strategies than the average player as, I am sure, do many people on these boards.
Anyhoo I have encountered a game stopping crash at the start of chapter 6, which seems to have no resolution as of yet, so my play though has halted for the time being. Hopefully it can get resolved soon since I was a great time.
To sum up my feelings of the game thus far: It's completely unoriginal, cribbing ideas from dozens of mostly better games, yet somehow manages to combine all of these elements into a cohesive whole where nothing feels superfluous. The story also suffers from the same cannibalizing of other peoples ideas but doesn't fare as well as the rest of the game and reading the reactions of those who have finished the game it seems like it doesn't get any better. A shame, since that would have moved the game into great territory but it doesn't change the fact that "Dead Space" is a very solid 8/10 action game.
