mothra's posts traditionally have to be given a pass because English is his second language.

I liked the animated movie more than the game so far. Not scary, but entertaining in a gory, swearing Saturday morning cartoon kinda way.
I'm going to play it alone in the dark later. With booze... or mushrooms or something. I constantly feel more and more desensitized every time I play a horror title.

Well I was enjoying the game, but now it crashes each time I start "shopping". Fuuuuuuuuuck!

it's odd, the sum of all "half-assed" parts of the game is more.
I think it's because the designers ripped off games and mechanics they genuinely like. The game is a sci-fi/survival horror pastiche to be sure but one made by people in love with that stuff rather than people trying to catch a ride on the Bioshock/RE4 money train. I'm sure the publishers were aware of the bandwagon they could jump on though!

Things that come to mind:
* It's fun.
* I still think it would have been better in a first person view.
* In the balancing department they could have done with less resources laying around. But it has to be said that the limited inventory counters that some, leaving the battles to be pretty intense.
Also, a rather odd, but forgivable feature is that you only find ammo for guns you own/carry.* It is very pretty.* It has great variation of weapons* It has a nicely limited number of upgrade points available (I only managed to max out my suit and one weapon).* ..nice changes in gameplay due to the Zero-G and vacuum environments* ..great sound (really liked the sound in vacuum where everything is silent except for muffled contact noises nearby)* it has a passable story, it's not bad, the plot is not 100% 'cookie cutter' material, just not overly original and/or inspiring. Then again, horror stories only rarely do surprise (and if a story does, within a few years there'll be a 100 clones of it).
Anyway, as mentioned in one of the earlier previews, it reminds in someway of the work of John Carpenter (which is a good thing IMHO): It's not really about the story, but rather about successfully creating a creepy tension that needs to be dealt with.* it's linear, but not trying hard to hide that. Also, in parts it does allow some backtracking and some exploration. When returning to earlier parts of the ship I was sad to see doors locked that were open earlier, I think it would have been good if those areas were still accessible, even if there wouldn't be anything to do/get there at all.
* It feels like The Thing in Space (which is good), and it definitely has taken some serious inspiration from System Shock (which is also good).
Verdict: Highly Enjoyable. Just missing the elevator music.

That's not true. I never bought the flamer or assault rifle but I get ammo for both. Now, I'm sure that the game does tailor your pickups based on what you have, but you do find useless ammo.

That's a pretty strange assessment, considering that on a 5.1 system, it's got one of the most immersive and convincingly spooky sound fields I've heard since, well, ever. It's one of the major reasons why I'd recommend the game - if you're going to play it, either play it on 5.1 speakers or a
good set of headphones.
And what are these magic/phantasy sounds that you speak of, and why are there restrictions to where they can be used?
the "spooky" sounds together with the ambient music are not locational, meaning they appear like they are in your head, therefore being pure gimmick to disorient you. this has nothing to do with realistic sound being carried across rooms and having proper processing like echo, muffled sound...they just bring everything to the forefront and then circle it around you. only good effects are in outer space and when you shoot something. I don't like how it tries to be gimmicky, too "in your face". it just draws too much attention to it than just being an "asset". don't know how else to put it.

I think the lack of ultra gore in this game makes a bit of sense. After all the "necromorphs" are just dead humans with rewritten DNA. They're dead. When you die your blood clots. So how can there be tons of blood if all the monsters have hard clotted blood in their veins.

I got up to chapter 10 then my computer died while flamethrowing some nasty little things that slide across the floor, and now it doesn't work.
Am using another computer to post this, but this computer wont run dead space.

How can DNA be rewritten if they're dead, how can muscles do anything if they're dead, etc., etc., etc...
Bringing science or even common sense into it is a bad idea.
