Perhaps they thought it was an actual survivor?

Yes, probably. It just bugged me that they went down so easily. They were supposed to be a military force deployed to deal with a possible necromorph threat after all.
EDIT: ... though it's probably a necessary cliche - the well prepared armed force falls to the enemy and it's up to the janitor to fix things. :)
And for some statistics - I used the Pulse Rifle and the Force Gun the whole time, while keeping the Cutter and the Linegun as backup weapons, but I rarely needed them. I used the Pulse Rifle most of the time, keeping the Force Gun for close quarters combat. But it is damn useful close up - a few times I managed to blow off all limbs from a necro with one shot from point blank range. I even managed to do that to that constantly regenerating mofo. Apart from those, I tried the Flamethrower, but found it to be useless (or maybe I just wasn't good enough with it).

i'm about half way into level 3 and here is what i think so far:
-game environments feel very sparse and pared down; they could have used more detail; there's not a lot of interacting with objects
-controls are garbage (on the PC), they would be WAY better if I could switch my field of view/aim faster
-strong console feel to it (i.e. no jumping/no walking over ledges)
-characters feel rather flat and there seems to be a lack of urgency so far compared to many other games
-sound is alternately effective and annoying
-I probably like it less than Bioshock, which I was very dissatisfied with

The xbox, for all its processing power, still does have trouble calculating jumps and ledges :(

Really? The actual hardware has trouble with these calculations? Now you've spewed some stuff in your time for sure but where are you getting this one from?

Warning Will Robinson: Your sarcasm detector is busted.

Not busted, but confused by the Aja uncertainty quotient. This is a guy that loves BioShock, and defends it in endless cycles of wtf, after all.

Some of the quests seemed quite familiar too: finding a keycard on a body in medical, researching a poison for the biomass.
I thought that it seemed like a remake aborted half way through. I especially thought so as the team were rumoured o be making SS3.

Wasn't Doug Church the one rumoured to be making SS3, or is my memory going?

I keep playing it off and on, but I don't know if I'll finish it. The gameplay is enjoyable enough, and it isn't frustrating- but the plot is tepid. I've just arrived on the Vickenbacker and the game just hasn't gotten going. It's hard to believe that the game is more than half over- it never became intense, never put on the pressure.
