I just picked this up today but have a couple of questions. Now keep in mind I haven't played it more than 20 min or so, but it feels very consoley. So bad in fact, I feel like uninstalling the thing right now. But.... seeing as all you intelligent....ahem... TTLG'ers think it's good I'm going to keep plugging at it a bit longer.
Do you have to use the arrow keys to navigate the inventory etc, cause that's a real pain in the ass. And just how actiony is the game, because turning my character around isn't the easiest thing in the world either. (BTW: I did turn off vsync which made a huge difference with the mouse for some odd reason). But if it's a title like Doom or HL2, you really need to be able to turn on a dime, and if there is a lot of run and gun in the game it must be very tough.
As to the graphics, I just got a new dual core comp with an 8600GT card and 3 gigs of memory. I know, not exactly state of the art, but for me a big improvment. Anyway, with those specs, I figured I may be able to run it at better than 1024 X 768. Should I be able to?
Oh and the game just crashed. Something about Windows Firewall blocking it. Anyone else run into this?

Hold down and drag the mouse wheel button.

It ain't a twitch shooter, it's survival horror. Sluggish and/or unintuitive controls are married to the genre. A lot of the PC-only gamers at TTLG have difficulty grasping this, there haven't been many Survival Horror titles on the platform after all.
The in-game v-sync does cause mouse lag. The solution is to force v-sync from your GPU driver's control panel, leave off the in-game v-sync.
Also go into Control Panel->Mouse and turn off pointer precision.

Dead Space is ridiculously well optimised. Feel free to run it at your monitor's highest resolution, maxed out. Framerates will be ridiculously high with V-sync disabled.

Shouldn't the solution for that one be obvious? Go into Windows Firewall from the Control Panel and add Dead Space to the exception list.

Oh, be sure to play on Hard difficulty. Item spawns will scarcer and you'll have to better manage your resources. A much more satisfying experience for SS2 veterans like ourselves.

Well I already added Dead Space to the exception list and it just crashed again after about an hr. Any other ideas?
Although after playing for a while, I've decided to change my tune about the game. I'm starting to get used to the weird movement, and just got to the area where you can upgrade your equipment. I also just realized that you can stomp down on certain things to pick up goodies and that a bit of exploring can also be beneficial. Game does seem very linear and heavily scripted though. Although I'm finding even that isn't so bad because the game does ooze atmosphere.
I did turn up the graphical options. Noticed that it defaulted to med settings and turned everything up to high and turned the rez up a couple of notches as well. Looking very good.
Now I need to get rid of the pesky crashes.

Hmmm, Dead Space's SecuROM DRM clashing with your system might be the problem. It could be clashing with some virtual drive or disc burning software, which has been known to happen. May you should try looking into "patches"?

Thanks. Not sure what's happening with the game, but I may have gone overboard with the graphics. I tried to crank everything up and the game crashed again with all these weird artifacts all over the place. I had to ctr, alt delete to get to the task mgr which did get me out, but then even Windows had all the same aritfacts. I re-booted and everything seemed fine. Ran some diagnostics and got no errors so I assume it's the game, but never had anything like that happen before.
Either way, went back into game and turned the rez down to 1024 X 768 and played for at least 2 hrs with no issues.
As to the game. Wow! Much more than I expected. While I don't put it in the same league as SS2, which had more depth, it's nonetheless a very creepy and atmospheric game. I've heard people say it's not scary, but it's scaring the shit out of me. Not so much the creatures you're killing, but not knowing what's going to happen next is what's getting to me. I also like the way the game doesn't constantly throw something at you to kill, which does remind me of SS2.
I haven't had this much fun in a recent game since VTM Bloodlines.

Yeah Dead Space's downtimes really improved the immersion, something I wish Doom 3 had done.

If you're getting artefacts even outside of the game make sure you're Proc isn't over heating.
Pull open your case and make sure the heatsink (under the fan, not the fan itself) is free of dustbunnies.
Awhile back I had chronic crashes in ANY 3D app, and the culprit is more often your CPU than your GPU, if its heat related anyway.

Having just finished a 2nd playthrough (first one was about 2004 i think) I can vouch for this. Not being able to really absorb the audio logs without being interrupted sucked. I started playing RoE too. but I gave up after about an hour because.... well really what's the point?

Yes. Do this. Buy canned air. Buy in bulk. Clean out the case often. I went 4 months without a decent video card because I did not do this. It was torture.
