I wait until the tentacles retract and then fire at the yellow blob, at that point they are more or less still which makes it easy to make every shot count.
And the contact beam sure looked devastating when I fired a test shot early in chapter 6, I haven't tried it on bad guys yet though. Not sure yet if I want to put any power nodes or ammo into it (seems expensive).

So was I, I just don't like using smilies, they're so blatant. I'll keep that in mind next time, sorry.
I have invested points into the Stasis module based on your previous feedback of my save. Thanks, BTW.
Oopsie, I thought you were being serious. . .
As for the stasis module, it is a matter of preference and playstyle how much you upgrade it, I'd say. I like to upgrade it to give me more time to dismember the necromorphs as well as the ability to carry more of it around to reduce the amount of backtracking to stasis chargers.

I'm reinstalling to give the game another try. Out of curiosity, would it be feasible to rely exclusively on the assault rifle?

You can probably do it, it'll make things harder for you though since its not that great, even fully upgraded. Plasma Cutter is your best friend imo.

IMO assault rifle is the third best weapon in the game (behind plasma cutter and line gun). Rather situational though.
It's lousy for de-limbing and against some of the more difficult necros it will be an ammunition sink. I wouldn't even try taking on a brute with it. Strengths are that it is hitscan (even the plasma cutter has travel time) and that it kills fairly well simply by aiming at center of mass. Secondary is cool but worthless. Probably the most accurate gun if you fire in bursts, and great for the few areas in the game where you can engage long distance.
Probably one of the best weapons for enemies with the big yellow weak points.
The upgrades for this gun are very good and downright necessary.
Still with all the weird weapons in the game, playing through with the bullet hose would just be boring. Like going to an exotic restaurant and ordering a cheeseburger.

I already played through without ever touching it, so now I want to try playing completely differently.

i played with plasma, line and ripper. nothing much else you need on hardcore, besides patience and a little aim. there's always something lying around you can throw back at them (which is pretty effective, especially parts of their own body - not only the explosive slime)
catbarf on 27/3/2009 at 00:55
Well, the assault rifle seems pretty powerful. With one damage upgrade, it can kill Slashers in 15-25 shots to the body. It actually seems able to dismember, as short bursts to the limbs kill with only 6-10 shots. Since the enemies usually drop 25 apiece, I'm halfway through Medical and I've already got 547 rounds. Ammunition's not going to be a problem for now.
The other thing that I like about it is how effective it is in stopping them. When I fought the captain, a long burst killed the Infector, and then fifty rounds put down the Super Slasher. Neither could do anything but flinch while getting shot. Even if it doesn't do much damage, it keeps them pinned.

It's excellent for suppression, yeah.

Has anybody else played through it on Nightmare yet?
I found myself having to do a lot of things that I didn't do on normal (never played hard)
I rarely used stasis on normal, and Kinesis was just a convenient way to smash supply boxes. But on nightmare I found that I couldn't get through the game without paying attention to every corner of the gameplay.

i played nightmare through until 2/3 (pushing marker around) and didn't find anything harder than on HARD since pretty much everything I have is maxed out and my suit can take shitloads of hits and I know the pattern of every enemy and boss. so it got boring quick. that's the downside of the game, predictability (and the overblown soundtrack I loathe). but after playing many other AAA games that came out before/after it's still one of the best in a year of mediocrity and big unkept promises.
